At the Owen residence, Joanna looked thoroughly miserable after ending her call with Mrs. Gower.

"What's wrong?" Hayden Owen asked, walking into the room.

"It's that pretentious social club again. Apparently, the next meeting is going to be at Wade Jewell's academy for their anniversary gala. She specifically called to tell me Valery insists I have to be there," Joanna huffed, the mere thought of Valery's arrogant smirk making her blood boil.

If it weren't for her husband's friendship with Wade, she wouldn't give Valery the time of day.

"That actually works out perfectly. I was going to ask you to come with me to Wade's anniversary gala anyway," Hayden said. He, too, had received an invitation.

"But I don't want to go!" Joanna complained, utterly repulsed by the idea. "You have no idea. I heard Valery brought her daughter-in-law to the club today and strutted around like she's the only woman on earth with one. Acting like her daughter-in-law is God's gift to the world!"

Her expression fell, and a wave of sadness washed over her. "All the other women bring their daughters, their daughters-in-law, or at least their sisters. But me? It's always just me. I'm always alone."

Hayden's heart ached with guilt as he looked at his wife.

Years ago, they had relocated their entire family back to their hometown to care for his ailing father, and his business had been based there ever since.

It was only recently, as the business expanded and after his father's passing, that they had returned to Aldercy City.

Thanks to Caspian Sterling's support, their business hadn't missed a beat and was actually doing better than ever.

But socially, they were isolated. Their son's family lived abroad. The friends they used to have in Aldercy City had drifted away during their long absence.

Hayden managed fine—he had his business associates and his new friendship with Wade Jewell.
