With the decision made, Hulda went to inform Desmond.
Stepping out of his office, she instructed Dr. Lynch and the rest of the team to pack their bags. She had already booked their return tickets. The journey back would take a full day, meaning they had to hit the road by dawn tomorrow.
Instead of heading straight to the guesthouse, Hulda changed direction and walked toward the town elementary school.
It was at that exact moment Joanna's call came through.
Glancing at the caller ID, Hulda answered immediately. "Hi, Joanna. Is everything okay?"
Abby walked quietly beside her director, listening.
Whatever the person on the other end said, Hulda sounded deeply apologetic. "I'm so sorry, Joanna, I'm actually not in Aldercy City right now."
Hearing this, the hopeful light in Joanna's eyes instantly died out. "Oh, I see. It's nothing, really... I was just hoping you might accompany me to the ladies' social club gathering."
"The ladies' social club?" Hulda paused, vaguely recalling that the last time she had visited the old courtyard to see Hayden and Joanna, she had promised to go with her. "When is it, Joanna?"
"This Saturday," Joanna replied, her voice subdued. "But it's fine, really. You're out of town on business, your work comes first."
She genuinely wanted Hulda by her side—it was the perfect way to wipe that smug look right off Valery's face!
But that was just her being petty. She couldn't inconvenience Hulda over a social rivalry.
"I'm sorry for bothering you, Hulda, please don't stress about it—"
"I can make it this Saturday."
