She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 238

Hulda arrived at the town elementary school. For some reason, her heart wouldn't let go of little Kit, and she needed to see the child one last time before leaving.

She searched the temporary shelter area thoroughly but couldn't find her anywhere.

Just as she was about to leave in disappointment, she turned around and spotted Kit's tiny figure trudging toward her with her head down.

"It's only been one night! How did she get so filthy again?" Abby gasped in shock, having tagged along with Hulda.

Hulda stared at the little girl, her eyes tightening with a storm of complex emotions.

It was true. She had just scrubbed the girl clean and washed her clothes the day before. Yet, in less than twenty-four hours, Kit was covered in grime again.

It wasn't just her clothes. Her exposed skin—including her face—was smeared with dirt. It wasn't as bad as the thick crust of mud from before, but it was still shocking.

Her jagged, uneven hair, which had been neatly combed, was now a tangled bird's nest once more.

All this, just one night after being thoroughly cleaned.

A local woman passing by heard Abby's gasp and offered a well-meaning warning. "I wouldn't bother with that kid if I were you. It's completely hopeless."

By then, Kit had shuffled closer.

As she approached, a pungent, stomach-turning smell wafted through the air.

The local woman immediately recoiled, pinching her nose. "Good lord, Kit! Did you fall into a cesspit or something?! We all have to live in close quarters right now! Are you trying to suffocate us with that stench?!"

Faced with the harsh scolding, Kit didn't say a word. She just kept her head down, her tiny fists clenched tight at her sides.

Unable to stand the smell, the woman shouted that she refused to sleep anywhere near the girl and stormed off to complain to the officials.
