Miles had been craving his mom's Honey Glazed Spareribs for ages. The last time he saw her, he had been sick, so he didn't get to eat them.
Since then, she hadn't come home at all.
He had thought about calling her, but he felt like giving in first meant he was losing.
She was the one in the wrong! She was the one who had bullied Sylvie.
And she hadn't even apologized to her yet!
Plus, Sylvie had been so nice to him lately, and he didn't want to make her sad by acting like he missed his mom too much.
But this was different. Grandpa was the one forcing him to call her to come home. It wasn't his idea, so he wasn't betraying Sylvie.
With that logic securely in place, his tone grew even more demanding. "I'm at Grandpa and Grandma's house. Hurry up and get over here. I want to eat those ribs tonight."
At the sanatorium entrance, Hulda listened to her son mimicking the exact same entitled, commanding tone the rest of the Jewell family used. Her eyes dimmed.
She could easily and ruthlessly sever all ties with the rest of them, but she could never completely cut out her own son.
No matter how much this child broke her heart, he was still hers. She had a duty and a responsibility to him.
There was a very real, unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.
Because of that, she could never truly wash her hands of him.
But while she couldn't abandon him, she was now more than capable of calmly ignoring his bratty demands.
"Ask the nanny to make it," Hulda said smoothly, continuing her walk toward the security desk.
Dead silence fell over the line. She could practically hear Miles gasping in shock.
A second later, the boy's aggressive demands returned. "The nanny's food sucks! I want yours! You always used to cook for me, didn't you?!"
