By now, Hulda had completely lost interest in her book. After all, it's human nature to love a little gossip.
And right now, her inner busybody was fully invested in this blind date drama.
Hearing the woman's request, the tension bled out of Justin's shoulders, and his tone shifted back to its usual casual drawl.
He shot her an easy grin. "Sure thing. Throw me under the bus, I can take it."
Hulda twitched her lips in a slight smirk.
Look at him playing the gentleman.
With the pressure off, the tension between the two dissipated.
They made polite small talk for a while longer, but Hulda tuned them out and returned to her reading.
When it was time to go, the young woman specifically walked over to Hulda's table. "Goodbye! Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness!"
Hulda, who had been completely absorbed in her book, blinked in sheer confusion. "Huh? What?"
She was about to ask for clarification, but the woman just gave a cheerful wave and scurried away.
While Hulda sat there trying to figure out why a complete stranger was wishing her 'happiness'—and with who, exactly—Justin swaggered over. He carelessly dropped into the seat right next to her. His eyes darted to the pages. "You read untranslated foreign literature?"
And French, no less...
He could barely stumble through an English novel. His French was limited to a handful of basic greetings. Actually reading a book in it was completely out of the question.
Hulda glared at him. "What on earth did she mean by that?"
She had never spoken to the woman. They had sat near each other, ordered the same drink, and exchanged exactly one polite nod.
There was absolutely no reason for her to march over and drop a comment like that before leaving.
