Refusing to waste another second on Julian's sour expression, she raised her voice and called out to Dr. Lynch and the rest of the crew, "Break's over! Let's get back to work!"
Hearing their director's call, the men got up and headed toward the base station.
Seeing Julian blocking the way, Caleb patted him on the shoulder. "Excuse us, we've got work to do."
Julian stepped aside with a dark scowl, though his eyes remained fixed on Hulda.
She ignored him entirely, diving straight back into the installation.
It wasn't until the sun was dipping below the horizon that the team finally called it a day.
On the walk back, Abby brought up the encounter. "Director, what was that guy talking to you about earlier? You looked pretty ticked off, and he didn't look too happy either."
Hulda didn't even want to think about the man. She just muttered, "I'm reserving judgment on Zane's glowing review of his character."
She hardly knew the man, having barely spoken more than a handful of sentences to him. He was effectively a stranger.
Yet he had the audacity to waltz over with zero boundaries and lecture her with such archaic, toxic garbage. That was not the behavior of a "helpful, decent guy."
Thinking about it, she turned to her assistant. "From now on, if you see him, walk the other way."
Abby nodded emphatically. "Got it. I knew he was a creep from the start."
As they neared the project guesthouse, Hulda spotted a small, dust-covered figure waiting in the distance.
The moment she saw Hulda, the little girl's eyes lit up, and she came sprinting over.
"Hey, Director, isn't that Katherine?" Abby recognized her instantly—after all, she was the only kid in town constantly covered in dirt.
"Katherine!" Hulda smiled warmly and waved at her.
The little girl ran even faster, skidding to a halt right in front of them.
Without a word, she thrust a handful of small, wild berries toward Hulda.
Looking at the offering, Hulda was mildly surprised. "Are these for me?"
The little girl nodded eagerly. "Just picked 'em. They're sweet."
