Sylvie hadn't seen Herbert all day, not at home and not at the office.
As the workday drew to a close, she received a call from the Jewell family estate demanding they come over for dinner.
She went to Herbert's office, intending to head over with him.
But when she arrived, she found his office empty.
As his assistant, she knew his schedule inside and out, and there was no off-site meeting booked for today.
It wasn't until she called him that she found out there had been an emergency at the university where he was an honorary professor, and he had rushed over to handle it.
Left with no other option, she had to head to the estate alone after work.
Meanwhile, Herbert managed to wrap up the university issue earlier than expected. He decided to swing by his own house to change clothes before heading to the estate.
Seeing him walk in, Callie looked surprised. "Mr. Jewell? I thought you and Mrs. Jewell were having dinner at the main estate tonight?"
She hadn't even started preparing dinner.
Herbert nodded. "We are. Relax, I'm just here to change."
Noticing a strange pair of shoes in the entryway, he asked, "Do we have a guest?"
"Oh." Callie pointed upstairs. "Finn's English tutor is here. He has a lesson tonight, so he isn't going to the main estate."
Herbert didn't comment on that. Finn was Sylvie's brother; his only responsibility was providing the space. How the boy was raised or educated was entirely up to Sylvie.
He hurried to his room, changed, and was just about to leave for his parents' house.
Callie hesitated for a agonizing moment before calling out, "Mr. Jewell, wait a second."
"Hmm? What is it?" he asked without breaking his stride.
She hurried after him. "It's about my salary. I haven't been paid for this month or last month."
He frowned. He hadn't expected something as sloppy as unpaid wages to happen under his own roof.
In his massive corporate empire, a late paycheck was utterly unheard of.
Without a second thought, the words slipped out of his mouth. "For things like this, just talk to Hulda..."
