She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 305

"What do you mean, survive? She managed just fine all these years, didn't she? She never said a word about it," Cora muttered defensively.

"Shut up!" Valery slapped the table, utterly furious.

No matter how much Valery disliked Hulda, she couldn't blindly defend her daughter in the face of these glaring bank records.

That meager amount was impossible to live on.

Yet, Hulda had endured it for years without a single complaint. If she had just mentioned it—even in passing, like Sylvie did—they wouldn't have been in the dark for so long.

Valery looked at Herbert, whose face was like a thundercloud. "Does this mean Hulda has been subsidizing her own life this whole time?"

It had to be true. Two or three thousand a month, if that. Callie’s salary alone was $3,000. Then there were groceries, utilities, the hourly cleaners, and the everyday expenses for the adults and the child.

The money Cora sent was a drop in the bucket.

But Hulda never asked Herbert or the Jewell family for a dime. And yet, their household ran flawlessly.

The nanny stayed. The cleaners came regularly. There was always food on the table, and the lights were always on.

There was only one logical explanation: Hulda had been paying out of her own pocket to keep their family afloat all these years.

When the realization fully hit, Valery collapsed back into her chair, drained.

Her cheeks burned with shame.

Just before dinner, she had called Hulda an ungrateful wretch.

She had sneered that Hulda lived a pampered life on the Jewell family’s dime and didn't know how to appreciate it.
