"Then what's wrong with him?" Callie asked.
Victor looked deeply conflicted and ultimately said nothing.
Unable to get any gossip out of him, Callie went back inside to wait in the living room with Finn.
Shortly after, Sylvie arrived with Miles.
Before Callie could even ask, Sylvie immediately questioned, "Is Mr. Jewell back?"
Callie nodded. "Yes. He locked himself in the study as soon as he got here."
She looked at Sylvie with concern. "Ms... Ma'am, what happened to him?"
Sylvie ignored the question, handed Miles over to Callie, and hurried up to the second floor.
Standing outside the study, she knocked gently, but there was no response.
Frowning, she knocked again and called out, "Mr. Jewell, it's me, Sylvie. Can I come in?"
A few agonizing seconds passed before Herbert's voice sounded. "Come in."
Sylvie took a deep breath to compose herself before opening the door.
The study looked exactly as it always did. Herbert was sitting calmly at his computer, focused on a student's thesis.
It was as if nothing had happened at all.
But something had happened.
He had left her and Miles behind at the estate and driven home alone.
Sylvie wasn't foolish enough to interrogate him about it. She approached softly, her tone cautious. "Mr. Jewell, I never imagined things would escalate like that today. If I had known, I wouldn't have brought up only receiving five thousand."
