She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 313

"Katherine!" Hulda ran forward, her heart pounding against her ribs, and pulled the girl toward her. "Are you okay? Did it bite you?!"

Her voice trembled—partly from the sheer terror of the ambush, and partly from the overwhelming emotion of watching this tiny child fearlessly throw herself into danger to protect her.

She was an adult. She was so much taller, so much stronger. Yet when that dog charged, her first instinct had been blind panic. She hadn't even reacted. Instead, this fragile little girl had rushed the threat and fought it off.

Katherine squirmed awkwardly, pulling out of Hulda's grasp and taking two steps back.

With a shy, stiff expression, she pointed. "Run away. Safe."

She meant the scary dog had run away, and the path was safe now.

A sudden realization hit Hulda. "Katherine... were you waiting out here because you knew there was a wild dog on this trail? You came to protect me, didn't you?"

This time, Katherine responded. She nodded, pointing again down the trail. "Run away. Safe."

Tears pooled in Hulda's eyes. It was the first time she had ever been so fiercely protected by a child.

Abby, who was terrified of dogs, finally caught her breath, her legs still shaking. "Katherine... thank you..."

She reached into her pocket, pulled out a Snickers bar she'd brought for energy, and shoved it into Katherine's grimy little hand. "Here, this is for you. Eat it yourself. Don't give it to your grandmother. Older people shouldn't have too much sugar."

Abby knew Katherine always saved any scrap of good food for Mrs. Gable.
