She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 312

Despite Caspian's stubborn front, Dylan wasn't blind. He knew his boss had flown all the way out to this remote mountain just to mend fences with her. Yet days had passed, and there was zero visible progress.

"There's been progress," Caspian said, shoving his hands into his pockets with a soft smile.

Dylan's eyes lit up. "Really? Like what?" He was genuinely dying to know, especially since Hulda had just given Caspian the absolute cold shoulder.

Caspian chuckled. "She cares about me. She gave me something to eat last night and even told me not to choke on it."

Dylan stared at him.

For some reason, he had a sneaking suspicion that his boss's interpretation of events was vastly different from reality. But as a helpless assistant, he knew better than to argue.

...

To reach the new monitoring station, Hulda and Abby took a different path that morning.

Halfway up the trail, they spotted Katherine. The little girl was crouched in the dirt, digging at the ground with her grimy fingers. It instantly reminded Hulda of the first time she saw her at the town's primary school—isolated, alone, scratching at the earth while the other kids ignored her.

A sharp ache flared in Hulda's chest. She hurried over. "Katherine, what are you doing out here?"

Hearing her voice, the little girl immediately stood up. She took a half-step forward, but then, realizing she was covered in dirt, quickly retreated two steps back.

Hulda's voice softened at the gesture. "Were you waiting for me?"

Katherine just blinked her large eyes, picking nervously at her own arms without saying a word.
