Noticing Hulda looking his way, Julian flashed what he clearly thought was a devastatingly handsome smirk.
He strolled up to her. "It's my fault. I should have introduced you to my mother sooner." He raised a condescending eyebrow. "But it's not too late. Let me formally introduce you. This is my mother. Once we're married, she'll be your mother-in-law. You need to respect and serve her. I expect you to never use that aggressive tone with her again. If you do, I will be very angry."
Hulda was stunned into absolute silence. She had never encountered such pure, unadulterated delusion in her life.
Even Abby and Dr. Lynch looked ready to explode. Caleb clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. Were this mother and son completely psychotic?
Julian noticed the glaring men and his frown deepened. He shifted his gaze back to Hulda, completely ignoring them.
"The Thorne family has a strict moral code. Our requirements for a wife are rigorous. She must be a pure, well-mannered, and obedient girl. Since I am the most successful man in our lineage, my wife must be even more refined and subservient."
He shot a disdainful look at Dr. Lynch and the others still flanking her.
"Once we're married, you will quit this job. Being surrounded by men all day is completely inappropriate and damages the Thorne family's reputation. I make enough money to provide for a household. I work at the town's primary school—it's a very prestigious position around here."
"Oh, and another thing—" He furrowed his brow, as if correcting a misbehaving child. "I saw you give Katherine two brand-name outfits and a massive bag of groceries the other day. The food is whatever, but I recognize those clothes. They cost hundreds of dollars a piece. After we get married, I'll make sure you never go hungry, but you will stop this reckless spending. Understood?"
"Oh my god... Hulda, I can't take this anymore. I'm going to punch him," Abby ground out through clenched teeth.
Hulda's mouth twitched. "Get in line."
Dr. Lynch was equally horrified by Julian's insane manifesto, but his age kept him somewhat grounded. "We can't hit anyone. We're here representing the Tech for Uplift Initiative. Assaulting a local resident would be a PR disaster."
