After suffering one grievance after another all afternoon, Miles's emotional state was entirely shattered. He had desperately waited for his father to come home, craving comfort. He never imagined his own father would scream at him, too.
When he heard Herbert tell him to learn from Finn, his emotions violently erupted. "I'm not learning anything from him! He's a thief who steals other people's stuff! I hate Finn! Tell him to get out!"
"Miles!" Herbert was utterly drained from a grueling day at the office and just wanted to relax. Coming home to this screaming match before he even had a bite to eat completely fried his nerves.
The cocktail of exhaustion and irritation flooded his brain, making his temper snap.
"Ahhh! I hate you, Dad!" Miles shrieked, turning and sprinting back upstairs.
"Miles!" Sylvie made a show of trying to go after him, but Herbert stopped her.
"Leave him alone!"
Sylvie looked distressed. "But dinner is almost ready."
"Let him skip dinner. He won't starve to death missing one meal. We can't keep indulging his terrible behavior." Herbert irritably yanked at his tie. "That kid has been completely ruined by Hulda..."
Like a ghost haunting his subconscious, Hulda's name slipped out effortlessly.
The moment it left his lips, Herbert froze.
Thoughts of the woman rushed in. He remembered how, for seven years, she had quietly used her own money to keep the household running flawlessly, maintaining his and his son's impeccable image to the outside world.
A sharp pang of guilt, which he had successfully repressed for weeks, slowly began to rise in his chest.
He looked down at the luxury tie grasped in his hands—it was one of the many gifts she had bought him.
"Oh, right, Herbert..."
Sylvie's soft voice pulled him out of his reverie. "Hmm?"
"Didn't you mention yesterday that Director Chambers invited our family over for dinner?" Sylvie asked as she stepped forward to take his coat and tie.
Herbert nodded.
Director Chambers was the department head at the university where Herbert worked, and the key figure responsible for recommending his promotion to full professor.
The official promotion cycle began around September and October, so Herbert still had some time to prepare.
