Callie had genuinely believed that after Herbert married Sylvie, her life in this household would only improve.
After all, she adored Sylvie; they had gotten along so well and seemed like real friends.
She never imagined that things wouldn't get better. She'd even had to shamelessly beg for her own wages after they were delayed for nearly two months.
Staring down at Miles crying on the bed, Callie's patience completely evaporated.
"You sit right here and think about what you've done! Do not go back up there and bother them again!"
Without another glance at the boy, Callie turned on her heel and slammed the door shut behind her.
The violently loud slam startled Miles, and he flinched hard, shrinking back against the headboard.
With red, swollen eyes, he stared at the closed door, sobbing uncontrollably.
Why was Callie being so mean to him?
She had always been so nice before...
Herbert arrived home just before dinner.
Seeing his father, a deeply wronged Miles practically launched himself into Herbert's arms, bawling. "Dad..."
Noticing his son's bloodshot eyes, Herbert frowned slightly and scooped him up. "Why are you crying?"
"Dad..."
"It's all my fault!" Just then, Sylvie appeared, holding Finn's hand as they walked downstairs.
Spotting Herbert, Finn shrank back timidly and whispered, "Mr. Jewell..."
Then he lowered his head, standing obediently by Sylvie's side in absolute silence.
Herbert glanced at Finn before letting his gaze fall on Sylvie, whose eyes were also suspiciously red.
