Callie knocked a few more times. "Come on out. Your dad and Sylvie aren't home. You can come down, eat something, and then go right back to your room. I won't tell them, alright?"
She had tried to get him out that morning, but the door remained firmly shut.
Herbert, catching her in the act as he left for work, had snapped, "If he won't come out, let him stay in there. When he figures out his mistake and knows he's wrong, he'll come out on his own."
"But sir, he's just a child. What if something happens to him locked up in there all alone?"
"What could possibly happen to him in his own home!" Herbert glared at the bedroom door furiously. "Miles, if you don't admit you're wrong, you can stay in there and think about what you did!"
He then issued a strict warning. "Callie, do not go soft and coddle him, or he'll never realize his mistakes!"
With that final instruction, Herbert left for the office.
Sylvie left with him. She hadn't said a single word the entire time, only pausing at the door to tell Finn to be good and listen to Callie.
Now, balancing the lunch tray outside the door, Callie kept knocking.
She was told not to coddle him, but he was just a kid. How could she completely ignore him?
He barely touched his dinner last night, skipped breakfast entirely, and now it was midday. His little body wouldn't be able to handle starving for so long.
If something actually happened to him, the family would absolutely pin the blame on her.
Anxiety bubbled up, and she knocked louder. "Miles! Miles, please open the door. If you don't want to come downstairs, I can bring the food in and you can eat in your room."
No matter what she said, the door didn't budge.
Inside, it was completely silent.
"Why isn't he answering? Do you think he fell asleep?" Finn asked.
Callie frowned. Even if he were asleep, he should have woken up from all her loud knocking.
