She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 349

Sylvie buried her face in her hands, looking as though she couldn't bear to go on. "If something really happens to him, what am I going to do..."

"Shut up! Nothing is going to happen to him! There is no 'if'!" Cora shrieked, bristling like a threatened animal the moment the words left Sylvie's mouth.

Valery sneered at Sylvie's hysterical sobbing and turned her anger onto Callie. "And you. You sleep in the nanny's room right next to the front door. He opened and closed that door in the middle of the night, and you didn't hear a thing? We hired you to watch him. Where is your sense of responsibility?"

Callie felt a surge of deep injustice.

She knew this was coming. In the end, they were going to dump all the blame on her.

"Ma'am, I've just been so utterly exhausted lately. Every single day I have to cook all three meals for everyone, do the grocery shopping, and look after the kids. I just don't have the energy left. The second my head hits the pillow, I'm out cold. Unless it's a massive crash, I'm not going to wake up..."

"Oh, listen to you. We pay you to be a nanny. Cooking, shopping, and watching the kids—isn't that exactly your job description? You make it sound like we're working you to the bone for free! You make thirty thousand a month, not three thousand!" Valery snapped back icily.

Callie froze. She opened her mouth to argue but realized she had no defense.

It was true. Cooking, shopping, and childcare were exactly what a nanny was supposed to do. Her friends in the same profession handled the exact same workload, if not more, and most of them only made twenty to twenty-five thousand. She was the only one making thirty.

And that thirty thousand had been set by Hulda because Hulda felt bad that she was working hard to teach her how to cook.

The only reason the job felt so overwhelming now was because Hulda had never let her do this much work.
