"What exactly did he do that was so terrible to make you treat him like that?" Wade asked.
Herbert recounted the disaster at Director Chambers's house—how Miles had shattered the Director's most prized trophy, refused to admit it, and threw a massive tantrum.
Wade's brow darkened instantly. "Is this going to jeopardize your promotion to full professor?"
"Dad!" Cora shrieked, sobbing wildly. "How can you care about a promotion when Miles is missing?! If something happens to him, what's the point of him being a full professor if he loses his only son?!"
Wade shot Cora a dark look but kept his mouth shut.
Herbert took a deep breath. "Director Chambers hasn't said anything yet, but I'm already looking for a craftsman to restore the trophy. Right now, finding him is all that matters."
Hearing that, Cora collapsed onto the sofa, muttering over and over, "Miles... my baby..."
Valery's face was etched with worry, completely lost as to what to do.
The atmosphere in the living room was suffocating.
It was only then that Sylvie noticed Finn huddled in the corner of the dining room. She carefully gauged the family's mood before slipping into the kitchen area and pulling him aside.
"Go back to your room and don't come downstairs for a while," she whispered.
Finn nodded and obediently followed her out.
The family finally noticed him, but with all their minds consumed by Miles's disappearance, no one paid him any attention.
