Otherwise, rumors wouldn't have spread among the kids that Katherine was 'toxic' or 'contagious.'
Those cruel words were most likely fabricated by the parents to scare their children away from playing with her.
Of course, Hulda could understand the parents' reasoning to some degree. After all, Katherine's previous living conditions had been truly appalling.
But as a result, the child had never had a single friend. Naturally, there was no one to share the simple joy of this place with her.
Clearly, Hulda was the very first person Katherine had ever brought here.
The little one excitedly darted around before expertly plucking a few wild berries from the branches. Out of habit, she moved to wipe them on her shirt, but stopped midway when she looked down and realized she was wearing the pristine new clothes Hulda had bought her.
Hulda smiled, pulling her water bottle from her backpack. "Here, I have some water. Let's wash them before we eat."
The little girl's eyes lit up, and she eagerly trotted over, watching intently as Hulda rinsed the berries.
Once they were clean, Hulda placed the entire handful into Katherine's palms.
Katherine shook her head and picked out the two largest ones, offering them to Hulda.
Truthfully, just as Abby had mentioned before, these berries weren't particularly delicious. But for Katherine, this was the absolute best treat she had access to.
Hulda smiled and accepted them. "Thank you, Katherine."
Katherine gave a shy smile. Just as she was about to eat her share, she caught Caspian and Dylan out of the corner of her eye. She blinked her large eyes a few times, visibly debating with herself. Finally, she puffed her cheeks, marched over, and shoved a single berry into each of the tall men's hands.
"Eat. Sweet." Her little demeanor was utterly stoic.
Handouts complete, she spun around and bolted back to Hulda with a giggling smile.
Dylan stared blankly at the tiny berry in his palm, looking entirely bewildered. "Wow... she actually shared with me."
A wave of profound guilt immediately washed over him. He had never once offered the kid a single snack. Not only that, but he had just called her feral.
He really wasn't a great adult...
Caspian lowered his gaze to the berry in his hand, a fleeting look of surprise crossing his features.
Katherine bounded back to Hulda's side and sat on a rock, obediently munching on her berries, though her eyes never left Hulda.
