In the mountains at dusk, Hulda had just finished her work for the day.
Katherine bounded over excitedly, grabbing her hand and pulling her toward the other side of the mountain.
"Katherine, where are you taking me?" she asked, though her body cooperatively followed the little girl's lead.
"Hey, Hulda, where are you two going?" Abby Corbett called out in a hurry.
Hulda glanced back over her shoulder as she was towed along. "You guys head back first. I'm just going to take a look with Katherine. We'll be fine."
Everyone at the institute knew how much Katherine adored Hulda, so they figured the girl would never do anything to hurt her and didn't think much of it.
"Alright, I'll head to the cafeteria and grab your dinner for you then," Abby replied with a smile, walking off with Dr. Lynch and the others.
Seeing Hulda being dragged away by Katherine, Dylan couldn't help but look at Caspian. "Boss, where do you think that little rascal is taking Ms. Atherton?"
The man's eyes darkened slightly. "Come on. Let's go see."
Dylan hesitated. "Boss, isn't it a bad idea to just brazenly follow them?"
If Ms. Atherton caught them, she'd definitely roll her eyes again.
"This mountain is huge. Does she own it?" Without another word, Caspian strode after them.
Hulda let Katherine lead her along an unfamiliar, winding dirt path.
Yet, she didn't feel a sliver of fear or unease. She trusted Katherine completely.
After navigating through a dense thicket of trees, the view suddenly opened up before them.
It was a gentle, grassy slope dotted with colorful wildflowers and a few small trees bearing wild berries.
Hulda recognized the berries immediately—they were the exact same kind Katherine had washed and given to her halfway up the mountain earlier.
So this was where she had picked them.
Standing on the slope, they had a sweeping view of the distant landscape. A gentle breeze blew past occasionally, carrying the sweet scent of flowers and grass. It was perfectly idyllic.
Katherine's eyes sparkled as she looked up at Hulda. Seeing the older woman smile, the little girl broke into a wide grin of her own.
