Miles is missing!

Abby's words hit Hulda like a physical blow to the head.

Her mind instantly went blank, and she stumbled backward.

"Director!" Abby hurriedly reached out to catch her. "Don't panic! Call them back immediately and figure out what's going on!"

Hulda forced herself to steady her breathing and scrambled to dig her phone out of her backpack.

Normally, she kept her phone in her pocket. It was just this one day that she'd carelessly tossed it into her bag—and of course, this was the day disaster struck.

She unlocked the screen. Sure enough, there were dozens of missed calls from Herbert and the Jewell family, as well as a few from unfamiliar numbers that had to be the police.

Hulda immediately dialed the police back. It rang exactly once before someone answered.

The officer on the other end didn't bother with pleasantries. "Ms. Atherton, you finally called back. Where are you right now? Is Miles Jewell with you?"

Hearing the police ask that question made Hulda's stomach drop.

It meant Miles was still completely unaccounted for.

"No... I'm out of town on a business trip. Miles isn't... he isn't with me..." She tried with everything she had to control her voice, but it still shook violently.

Hulda's answer was exactly what the police had expected. If Miles was really with his biological mother, there was no way they wouldn't have heard a peep by now. After all, the parents were only divorced; it wasn't a blood feud. There was no logical reason for a mother to hide the fact that she had found her son from his father.
