Ripping open the car door, Caden slammed his foot on the gas, tearing out of the parking structure and rocketing toward the crash site.
The sheer panic in his eyes was something he had never experienced before. His hands gripped the steering wheel so hard they shook violently.
He couldn't think. He couldn't process. All that mattered was that Shera was alive.
He prayed to God it was just an accidental button press.
He thought about calling Xenia to see if Shera was safe at home, but the old number he had saved for her was disconnected.
Caden's jaw was locked tight, his brow furrowed in absolute agony.
His heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would tear through his ribs.
He was driving like a maniac. Just as he merged off the highway, Aiken's call came through.
"Tell me," Caden demanded, his voice thick with desperate hope.
But the next words completely shattered his world.
"There was a crash on Linden Street. The vehicle belongs to Mrs. Hayes."
Caden's throat seized. His knuckles turned a terrifying shade of white against the leather wheel.
"Which hospital?"
"Trinity Hospital. I just got off the phone with dispatch. I'm heading there right now."
"Sir, she's a fighter, she'll pull through. She's going to be okay."
The moment Caden heard 'Trinity Hospital,' he violently wrenched the steering wheel, cutting across traffic to change course.
His mind went completely blank. He didn't hear a single word Aiken said after that.
The location pin dropped on his phone, and Caden kept the pedal floored until he practically launched the car into the hospital drop-off zone.
When he threw the door open, his legs completely gave out. He crashed to his knees, the rough asphalt tearing the skin off his palms.
Ignoring the bewildered ER Director waiting by the entrance, he demanded directions and sprinted toward the emergency wing.
The elevator was taking too long. Without a second thought, he threw open the stairwell doors and bolted up five flights of stairs.
The surgical light above the operating room was glaring red.
Outside the doors, a janitor was mopping a terrifying smear of fresh blood off the floor.
Caden gasped for air. The moment he saw the blood, his brain completely short-circuited.
Caden stood up, his eyes bloodshot and lethal.
After a brief introduction, the officer cut straight to the chase. "Based on the skid marks and the traffic cameras we've pulled, this was not an accident."
The air in the hallway instantly dropped to freezing. Caden's fists clenched so hard his bones popped, a murderous darkness overtaking his expression.
"Our preliminary investigation shows a suspect vehicle intentionally tailgated Ms. Jewell for several miles."
"They aggressively swerved and rammed her car, forcing her off the road and directly into a steel signpost, which caused the critical injuries."
"The suspect fled the scene immediately after the impact. We have units out actively hunting for them right now."
Tailgated. Rammed. Fled.
The aura radiating off Caden was so suffocatingly dark that even Aiken stepped back in fear.
He quickly jumped in. "Mr. Hayes, I've already dispatched our own security teams. We will find whoever did this."
Aiken pulled the officer aside to get the granular details without triggering his boss further.
Suddenly, the red light above the doors snapped off, and the heavy doors swung open.
