Early the next morning, Aiken reported the news of Rosalie Kerr's death.
"I checked everything. The brakes on the cement truck showed absolutely no signs of tampering. Judging from the traffic cams, it really was just a tragic accident."
"However..."
Aiken paused. "There was another car at the scene. She likely witnessed the entire thing happen."
Caden turned to look at him. "Helga. She was there."
Helga?
"Understood."
Caden walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, his gaze turning dark and calculating.
He guessed Helga had gone looking for Rosalie to probe for information, terrified she had already been sold out.
So, did Helga orchestrate the crash?
Or was there a third party pulling the strings?
He had originally planned to quietly relocate Rosalie, but someone was apparently desperate enough to silence her permanently.
And they didn't care how massive of a spectacle they caused doing it.
Was it purely out of revenge, or did they have an ulterior motive?
He had one prime suspect in mind.
Rhys Jewell.
Rhys had been heavily involved in this case lately. The man was ruthless, cunning, and completely utterly lethal.
He was the most likely candidate to pull off something this extreme.
But what was his endgame? Was it really just to avenge Shera?
"What's the status of the apartment in the Riverwood District I asked you to secure?"
"It's completely handled, sir," Aiken replied.
"Shera should be discharged soon. Send someone over to furnish it and make sure it's fully stocked so she can move right in."
"Right away."
—
Pearce had been a constant presence, helping Shera with her physical therapy. By now, she was capable of getting out of bed and walking around.
"Everything looks great. You're actually recovering remarkably fast. It's a good thing the wound wasn't too deep."
Noticing the time, Pearce gently told her to take a break.
