Shera shoved a stalk of celery into her hands, then stepped over to check the pot on the stove.

“Give it a rest. I'm not looking for anything right now, so don't try playing matchmaker.”

“My priority is my career. Once I'm successful and rich, I won't have any shortage of men.”

Xenia quickly followed her, using a coaxing tone. “Oh, just tell me! If both of them fell into a river, who would you save?”

Shera's lips twitched. “Neither. Let them both drown.”

Leaning against the counter, Xenia looked at Shera with a smile. “I actually think Dr. Pembroke is a great catch. Look at how he was running around taking care of you while you were in the hospital, showing up right on time every single day.”

“Plus,” Xenia leaned in, wiggling her eyebrows, “Felipa treats you so well, and their family dynamic is so harmonious. You wouldn't have any mother-in-law drama in the future.”

“Thanks for the input.”

Shera offered a tight smile. “With all this free time, maybe you should focus on your own love life, Ms. Denton.”

“Tch.”

Seeing that Shera wasn't going to engage, Xenia smacked her lips and went back to peeling the garlic.

The doorbell rang. Shera wiped her hands, wondering if Rhys or Felipa had come over.

She opened the door, only to be met with Caden's sharp, chiseled features.

“Caden?”

“Mhm.”

She looked him up and down. “What are you doing here?”

Did he regret letting her move in?

Was he here to take the apartment back?

Noticing her defensive expression, Caden held up a key.

“I forgot to give you the key to the safe in the study. And for the digital lock above it, you need my fingerprint to change the passcode.”

Shera nodded. Though reluctant, she stepped aside to let him in.

Caden walked through the door.

Xenia turned her head and immediately saw his face. Even though she wasn't exactly thrilled to see him, she offered a polite greeting anyway.

The man gave a curt nod before heading straight for the study.

Shera closed the door and walked in. Xenia mouthed at her silently.
