Caden shot him a sideways glance and picked up his drink from the table.
Assuming Caden was about to toast him, Abner eagerly moved his glass closer with a bright smile.
To his shock, the man didn't even spare his glass a glance, simply taking a slow sip of his own drink.
The boy's face turned pale, but he forced a laugh and downed his drink anyway.
“You're a busy man, I'm sure you forget easily. My dad talks about you all the time. He always says how successful you are at such a young age and tells me I need to learn from you.”
Caden lowered his gaze and let out a soft chuckle.
Still wet behind the ears, not even knowing how to make proper small talk, yet trying to rub elbows like the big players.
The young man shuffled his feet, clearly preparing to sit down next to him.
Caden looked up. Though there was a faint smile on his lips, his words were incredibly harsh.
“You, your father, your grandfather—I haven't heard of any of them. Nor do I have the slightest interest in your family history.”
“Mr. Hayes, you...”
He was just a kid, after all. Being shut down so brutally made his face burn beet red. He was about to say something else when the woman behind him shoved him out of the way.
“Move, move, move! Look at you, trying to schmooze without knowing your place.”
The woman glared at the boy, then turned to Caden with a sweet smile.
“Caden, long time no see! How is Dewitt doing lately?”
Caden shifted his gaze toward her. The moment he recognized the newcomer, the faint smile vanished from his lips.
“Tessa Tyson?”
The woman seemed slightly surprised, then looked at Caden with a bashful expression, seamlessly slipping into the seat beside him.
“Early this spring, my dad took me to the estate to visit Dewitt, but I didn't expect you to be away on a business trip that day, so I missed you.”
The woman wore a black babydoll dress, her hair styled in a playful updo. She had a luminous complexion and her eyes sparkled.
