"A recording?"
Shera reached for it, but Rhys pulled his hand back.
"Are you sure you want to hear this? This recording might..."
Shera looked at his concerned expression, slightly confused.
She smiled. "What is it? Some shocking secret?"
"Shera," Rhys said gently, looking into her eyes. "It's about you. I'm afraid it's going to upset you."
"Now you're just making me more curious."
She reached out and took the phone. Just as she was about to press play, Rhys spoke again.
"It was recorded in the interrogation room."
"Okay."
"Shera, after you listen to this, if you want to go confront him, I won't stop you."
Shera looked up at him. "Saying it like that means you'd rather I didn't."
Rhys didn't deny it.
Shera didn't say anything else. She turned the volume up and hit play.
First came static, followed by a woman's muffled sobs.
Then, that familiar voice echoed from the speaker.
"So, someone put you up to this?"
Shera's brow immediately furrowed. Just as she thought... things weren't that simple.
After a few seconds of silence, the man's voice continued.
"I'm offering you a deal. If you give me useful information and name the person pulling the strings, I will step in on Shera's behalf and agree to a settlement."
Shera's eyelashes fluttered.
"I'll arrange for you to leave the country and give you enough money to ensure you and your son are set for life."
For a second, she thought she had misheard. She dragged the progress bar back a few seconds.
"I'm offering you a deal. If you give me useful information and name the person pulling the strings, I will step in on Shera's behalf and agree to a settlement."
"Step in on Shera's behalf and agree to a settlement."
Shera pulled the phone away from her ear, clutching it in a daze.
The screen was still lit, the recording still playing, but her brain felt like it had short-circuited.
She struggled to process what Caden had said.
