She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 178

He stood up and walked closer to Caden. "I hope you don't disappoint me, Mr. Hayes."

After Lucius was taken away, Solomon stepped up and asked, "What's the next move?"

Caden looked down at the wedding ring on his left hand, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Confront Helga."

Lucius's confession alone wouldn't be enough to convince Shera.

"Got it."

—

When Helga heard that Caden wanted to see her, her heart soared.

She was out having dinner with friends, but the moment Aiken called, she abandoned them and rushed straight to Rosewood Gardens.

"Caden, I heard you wanted to see me."

Caden was standing by the window, a lit cigarette pinned between his fingers.

At the sound of her voice, his gaze shifted from the window to her face.

The living room was illuminated only by a single floor lamp. Helga was wearing a lightweight cardigan. She must have run through the rain, because her hair was damp.

Her lips curved into a smile, those two dimples of hers still undeniably charming.

He stared at her quietly, taking her in from head to toe, and took a slow drag of his cigarette.

The last lingering shred of childhood affection he held for her had been completely eradicated.

He had constantly made concessions for her because of her mother's life-saving sacrifice, and in return, she had used his wife's dying father as a pawn to win a love triangle.

Caden's stare made Helga's heart race, a sudden, inexplicable panic rising in her chest.

"Caden, why aren't you saying anything?"

He pointed toward the coffee table, his voice raspy from the smoke.

"Look at that."

Helga turned her head. A sealed manila envelope sat silently on the table.

"What is this?"

He didn't answer, turning his gaze back to the window, staring out at the jasmine bushes Shera had planted in the yard.

The wind was howling, driving the rain down hard. Most of the delicate petals had been battered off the stems, lying dead in the mud.

Hearing the rustle of papers behind him, Caden lifted his hand, took one last drag, and crushed the cigarette out in an ashtray.
