He slowly stood up, wincing as the pain in the back of his head flared.
He touched the spot and felt the sticky warmth of blood on his fingertips.
"I originally thought you and the Suttons were in this together, but judging by the current situation, you're probably the only person who can actually help me."
"Explain."
He replied, "I know you've been investigating Zachary lately, and I know you've got evidence that the people behind the Veridian Greens Project committed murder for profit."
Caden's expression darkened. "Who told you that?"
Sensing his hostility, Lucius answered, "Don't worry about how I know. All you need to understand is that our goals align."
"Because I'm a surviving family member of the Veridian Greens tragedy."
"My father was one of the fourteen workers who died."
"So you got close to Helga to dig up the truth about what happened back then?"
Lucius nodded. "Yeah. I thought getting close to her would lead me to some solid evidence, but it turns out her father is so paranoid he even guards his secrets from his own daughter. Helga didn't know a damn thing about the Veridian Greens project."
"She paid me to hack her grades, then paid me to beat up some punks for her. I'd lost my job anyway, so I figured I might as well treat her like a walking ATM."
Caden stared at him, his voice low. "You did all her dirty work just to investigate the truth?"
Lucius sneered. "My family was destroyed, and I had to sneak into this country illegally. You think I'm scared of getting my hands dirty? Plus, she was wiring me cash every month. Why wouldn't I?"
"As long as someone can help me get my revenge, everything I've done is completely worth it."
"And what if this entire thing got swept under the rug? What if nobody ever investigated?"
Lucius met Caden's eyes squarely. "Then I would have destroyed his daughter, and then I would have killed him."
"But luckily for me, you showed up. Honestly, we both owe Ms. Jewell a thank you. If it wasn't for her, you never would have turned your sights on Helga."
"If it weren't for her, you never would have realized you were sleeping next to a predator."
