Rowena looked Shera up and down, sneering. "The only reason she even managed to get her foot in the door is because you were abroad when Caden's grandfather was sick. You're too naive, Helga. Letting someone steal your spot and still playing nice with them."
Helga cast a subtle glance at Shera, lowering her head bashfully. "Please, don't say that."
Shera stood there expressionless, watching the two of them put on their little synchronized act.
Rowena had despised her from the very first day they met. Her hatred had only deepened after the incident where her young grandson tripped and fell, a mess she somehow blamed on Shera. Every time they crossed paths, she never missed a chance to gather an audience and hurl insults. After all these years, Shera was completely numb to it.
Shera gave a polite nod, having zero intention of engaging in a conversation. She turned to walk away, only to be sharply called back.
"What's this? Now you don't even know how to greet your elders? Do you really think just because Caden protects you, you can do whatever you please?"
Shera paused her steps. Seeing the look on their faces, it was obvious they didn't know about her and Caden's impending divorce. If Caden hadn't said anything, she wasn't about to be the one to spill the beans.
If word got out and someone decided to interfere with the finalization of the divorce, all her hard work would go down the drain.
If Rowena desperately wanted a greeting, she could have one. It was just a few words, nothing she'd lose sleep over.
Figuring it was better to avoid unnecessary drama, she nodded politely at Rowena. "Hello, Rowena."
Seeing Shera act just as submissive as ever, Rowena let out a condescending scoff. "I see you're still as spineless as always. Fine, I'm not an unreasonable person. Since Helga and I are shopping, you might as well tag along."
She snatched her designer handbag from Helga's grasp and shoved it toward Shera.
Her expression made it clear she thought allowing Shera to carry her bags was the highest honor bestowed upon her.
Shera looked down at the bag hovering in mid-air, then met Rowena's gaze calmly. "You and Ms. Sutton enjoy yourselves. I have errands to run, so I won't be keeping you company."
For someone who had always been completely subservient to suddenly act this arrogant—how was she supposed to stomach that?
She scoffed coldly. "She really has no class. Just because she's getting a tiny bit of recognition, she thinks she can look down on everyone else. What on earth is going to happen if she actually achieves something?"
The shopping trip had left Rowena in a foul mood. The moment she returned to the Hayes family estate, she immediately complained to Caden.
"Look at your precious wife now! Not only does she skip family dinners, but when I kindly invited her to shop with me, she had the nerve to flat-out reject me. Does she have any manners left?"
Caden sat beside her, effortlessly flipping through a financial magazine, completely tuning out her tirade.
"Caden, I am talking to you! Are you even listening to me?"
She snatched the magazine right out of his hands, demanding a reaction.
