Sure enough, Rowena was the vindictive type.
Right after finishing lunch with her client, Shera received a call from Zena, saying a woman named Hayes was at the studio demanding to see her.
By the time Shera drove back, sample clothes were strewn all over the reception room couch. Seeing her savior arrive, Zena hurriedly stepped forward.
"Where is she?"
Zena pointed toward the fitting room. "She's been here for over an hour, nitpicking every single piece."
Zena prided herself on having dealt with difficult clients, but she had truly never seen anyone this demanding.
Shera handed her bag over and patted Zena's shoulder. "I'll handle this. Go make two glasses of iced tea."
Shera knew the woman had come specifically to make her life difficult. If she didn't show up, Rowena would probably cause a scene all day, making it impossible to get any work done.
The fitting room door opened, revealing a dark-colored, mid-sleeve sheath dress that accentuated her radiant complexion. Though she wore flats today, her excellent figure was impossible to hide.
Seeing Shera standing to the side, Rowena scoffed disdainfully. "The busy woman finally returns?"
Shera let the cold remarks slide right past her.
She stepped forward, carefully adjusting the dress for her, then grabbed a shawl from a nearby rack. "This dress pairs beautifully with this shawl."
She stood back to take a look, thinking aloud, "You have a luminous complexion and a slender figure, and with your elegant hairstyle today, I think this dusty pink tone suits you perfectly overall."
She then nodded. "There's no need to limit yourself to dark, somber colors just because of age. Heavy, old-fashioned styles can feel too restrictive."
Though Rowena was nearing fifty, she maintained herself impeccably. Having studied classical dance since childhood, she was once a principal dancer. Even though she had retired from the stage years ago, the poise and elegance from her training hadn't faded in the slightest.
Rowena shot her a glance, took the clothes from her hands, and went back into the fitting room. When she emerged again, she indeed looked completely different, appearing far more vibrant and energetic.
Caden Hayes actually stood up to his aunt for her?
She was genuinely interested in the gala, but if the person standing next to her had to be Caden, she'd rather pass.
Just as she was trying to think of an excuse to decline, Rowena handed her an out.
"However, I think Helga is far more suited for an occasion like this."
Shera looked up.
Rowena continued, "Helga just returned from abroad and is now working at the company. This gala will allow her to build her network. You know as well as I do that Helga is a much better match for Caden, and a better fit for this kind of setting than you are."
The underlying message was clear: she and Caden weren't in the same social class, so naturally, she couldn't blend into his circle.
Rowena had practically been telling her this since the moment she walked through the door.
