Luther left.
Hilda sat alone for a very long time.
The setting sun cast its dying light across her face.
Bathing her in orange.
How could she ever agree?
But if she didn't, he would take Annie away.
Both children were her own flesh and blood.
But after everything—one marriage, two children, the agony of bringing them into the world—she couldn't even manage to protect them.
As she slowly stood up, her heart trembled, her face entirely lost.
She wasn't afraid of hard work.
She could make her own money.
But right now, she was completely powerless.
A tall figure stepped in front of her, carrying the faint scent of woodsy cologne. Hilda slowly looked up and saw Harrell. He looked very relaxed as he gently took her hand. Startled, Hilda tried to pull away. This was Havenworth City; she was terrified of ruining his reputation.
But he was firm.
He looked down at her, then at her stomach, and said softly, "I just came from your house. Everything is fine. The nanny is helping Annie with her homework. I told her not to make dinner for you because I wanted to take you out for something nice. Pregnant women need to eat well, right?"
Hilda stared at him blankly.
Harrell kept his warm smile.
"Who knows? Maybe a good meal will solve all your problems."
Hilda couldn't help but smile faintly.
…
Harrell took her out for Mexican barbecue.
Since Hilda was pregnant, she couldn't drink. So he just had a little to drink himself.
In the cozy restaurant, the sharply dressed man smiled as he looked at the woman across from him, serving her with total devotion. As night fell, countless fairy lights flickered on outside, burning bright and white. It was beautiful, like something out of a fairytale.
Hilda watched them intently.
Her eyes grew a little misty.
"Thank you, Harrell," she said.
Because he was the one who had given her this moment of peace.
Harrell didn't reply. Instead, he stood up, walked over to her, and placed his warm hand gently over her swollen stomach. Looking directly into her eyes, he got straight to the point. "Hilda, let me be the father of this child."
