By the time Hilda Cassidy returned home.
Her mind was still in a complete daze.
A diamond ring was slipped onto her left ring finger.
Harrell Judson had put it there, claiming it was his deposit and she wasn't allowed to back out.
The small villa, with its flower beds and little pond, felt incredibly warm and inviting.
Annie ran out from inside, throwing her arms around Harrell and begging to be picked up. He scooped her up with a smile, kissed her cheek twice, and held her while talking to Hilda. "My mother will come over tomorrow to officially formalize the engagement. It's a tradition in Havenworth City that I don't show my face for this part. Don't worry, my mother and I have figured everything out."
Hilda's heart was still unsettled.
She gently touched the diamond ring on her finger.
The man's expression remained perfectly calm. "Or do you still not like me?"
Hilda denied it instinctively. "No."
Harrell chuckled. "As long as you like it. I'll get going now. I still need to discuss things with my parents back home."
It wasn't until long after Harrell had left.
Hilda was still standing there, staring blankly.
Her mother, Gardenia, came out from inside. "What's wrong, Hilda?"
Hilda looked down at her young daughter.
Annie affectionately rubbed her mother's belly.
With just one look from the girl, Gardenia understood completely.
...
In the dead of night, Annie had fallen asleep.
The mother and daughter sat under the lamplight, having a heart-to-heart.
Hilda told her about Luther Sanford coming to Alpha City, and then about Harrell's proposal. As for that crumpled piece of paper, it was spread out under the light, looking a bit more legible.
Gardenia picked it up, put on her reading glasses, and studied it for a long time.
"Harrell doesn't seem like the type."
"What are your plans, Hilda?"
Hilda looked down at the massive diamond ring on her finger.
Gardenia didn't press the matter any further.
That boy Harrell was impeccable.
Even if he couldn't have children, his physical function was perfectly fine. It just so happened that her daughter had two kids of her own, and raising them together would be no different than having biological children. She adored Harrell and wanted nothing more than to see her daughter find a good home. Her only fear was the resistance from the Judson family.
And there certainly was resistance.
But Harrell had shouldered all of it single-handedly.
