Nighttime.
A black Rolls-Royce Phantom slowly pulled into the villa's driveway.
As the car parked, it seemed draped in the gleaming luster of the night.
The man who stepped out was the picture of aristocratic perfection and striking good looks.
Luther glanced up at the second floor, closed the car door behind him, and climbed the steps into the foyer.
Heading straight to the second floor, he checked on the kids first.
Little Annie was already asleep.
Little Landon was being looked after by a rotating shift of four nannies.
Hilda would take him when she had the energy.
Right now, the little guy was sleeping soundly. At almost two weeks old, he was sturdy and adorable. Just looking at him filled Luther with joy. He even scooped him out of the crib for a moment to hold him. The night nanny was secretly delighted; she could tell Mr. Sanford adored his youngest son.
After checking on the children, Luther finally returned to the master bedroom.
As it happened, Hilda was still awake, watching a movie.
— *The Legend of 1900*.
It was early summer, and her baby bump wasn't showing yet. Wearing a pure cotton nightgown, she lay on the sofa with her dark hair cascading naturally around her shoulders. She looked innocent, almost pure, not at all like a woman who had just given birth to two children. She seemed entirely untouched by the world.
The man's heart skipped a beat.
He sat down beside her without making a sound, wrapping an arm around her slender waist. "You like this film? I've seen it a few times myself."
Hilda had no desire to engage with him.
She pretended to be tired.
But the moment she spoke, her nose caught the scent of his cologne—mixed with perfume.
A very sweet, youthful perfume.
The kind a young girl would wear.
Hilda wasn't surprised that Yorick Lynn would invite young women to his gatherings.
But she was surprised that Luther had let one get so close.
Hilda didn't call him out on it. It wasn't worth agonizing over a man like Luther. She quietly muttered that she wanted to go to sleep. However, catching the subtle shift in her expression, Luther guessed exactly what she was thinking. He brought his cuff to his nose, took a sniff, and frowned slightly.
"Someone tried to get close to me, but I turned her down."
"Hilda, I care about you. I care about our marriage, which is why I'm willing to keep myself completely faithful to you. But do you really not care about me at all anymore? You clearly smelled perfume on me, yet you didn't even ask. You didn't ask who it was, or if I had betrayed you?"
