Early morning.
Luther was still deeply affectionate and gentle with Hilda.
Determined to win her over, he personally cooked her breakfast and prepared formula for little Landon. He held the baby while they ate; the little guy babbled happily, flashing his tiny, toothless smile. It was an adorable sight.
It had to be said, the man had a natural instinct for charming women.
Hilda, naturally, noticed his efforts.
Her expression softened slightly.
Truthfully, she hadn't wanted to fight in the first place.
Luther was the one who had forced her back, forced her to play the role of his wife, and even aggressively staked his claim on the baby in her womb. Now, he was forcing her to care about his romantic entanglements. The constant grinding down of her spirit made her think that maybe she should just play along and give him what he wanted.
To act like a perfect couple on the surface.
If that was what Luther needed.
— As for love, she had none left to give.
But Hilda never expected that even pretending would be so difficult.
After breakfast, Luther dropped little Annie off at school.
Hilda stayed with her youngest son, teaching him to babble.
At 10:00 AM, the hospital called, asking her to come in for a checkup, noting that she had missed scheduling her previous appointment.
Hilda got ready and headed out.
— It was that exclusive, private hospital.
After her examination, the doctor informed her that the baby was developing perfectly.
Healthy, cute, and thriving.
It was June, and the trees were a lush, unhurried green.
Hilda sat on a bench, looking down as she gently stroked her abdomen.
It was the first time she truly felt connected to this child.
The first time she felt a flicker of joy.
Returning to Luther's side had been absolute agony. Every passing second was a torment. It was only the child in her womb reminding her that she was still alive. Otherwise, she genuinely didn't know how she could keep going.
Hilda stood up, ready to head back.
But a few feet away, she spotted two familiar figures.
Naomi Zeller and Colin Sutton.
It was early June, yet Naomi was wearing a heavy knit cardigan. Her usual sharp, spirited aura was completely gone, leaving her looking sickly and frail. Furthermore, she hadn't noticed Hilda at all.
Hilda called out, "Naomi."
But Naomi didn't react in the slightest.
Instead, Colin turned his head, looking surprised to see her.
After a moment, he gently tugged at Naomi's sleeve.
Naomi turned and saw Hilda. Her striking face instantly went completely pale, even panicked.
Sensing something was terribly wrong, Hilda called out again, "Naomi, what's wrong? Why did you tell me you were in France the last few times I tried to reach you?"
Yet Naomi was clearly right here in Alpha City.
And she looked entirely too intimate with Colin.
Naomi wasn't even thirty yet. While Colin was an outstanding man, he was at least forty-five.
Why was Naomi with him?
And why wasn't she answering?
A dreadful suspicion began to take root in Hilda's mind.
Her entire body, her very heart, began to tremble.
She stepped forward. Naomi instinctively stepped back, but Hilda quickly caught her arm and brushed aside her hair.
— A hearing aid.
Naomi was wearing a hearing aid.
That was why she hadn't heard her calling softly just moments ago.
Hilda's face drained of all color.
