Chapter 22
Arthur’s expression grew serious as he teased, “Are you trying to empty out your old man’s company?”
“You’ve only been here a few days, and you’re already trying to fire this many people? I’ve got a whole line of people complaining to me.”
Lyra’s face darkened. “Then fire the ones complaining too. Fairchild Holdings doesn’t need employees like that.”
The Chairman’s face shifted, a flash of anger crossing his features. “Lyra, if this is how you’re going to act, I can’t allow it! I thought you came here to work, not to turn the place upside down.”
“I warned you before you started! Corporate dynamics are complicated, not some playground for your experiments. Throwing your weight around as the boss’s daughter and firing people on a whim will just make you a target for criticism.”
“When word of this reaches the Jamesons, what will they think of you? They won’t look at you favorably.”
Arthur used the Jameson family as leverage.
Lyra frowned. It was true that she used to care about Rowan’s opinion more than anything else.
But she didn’t give a damn anymore.
“Dad, why don’t you understand? I don’t care what anyone else thinks. For the sake of the company’s future, these people cannot stay. I know you don’t believe me-but I have my reasons for firing them, and you’ll understand eventually.”
Arthur had always doted on his daughter, but this time, disappointment flickered in his eyes. “Lyra, I was thrilled when you said you wanted to work. But the company isn’t a place for you to act recklessly… How about this? I’ll transfer some money to your account. Call Madeline and your friends, go catch a movie, or do some shopping. Caleb, the board members, and I can handle the business.”
Believing it was best she didn’t work at all, Arthur effectively placed her on indefinite leave.
Seeing the disappointment in her father’s eyes sent a sharp ache through Lyra’s chest. She had lived a whole other life, but she couldn’t exactly prove to him that Fairchild Holdings was doomed to collapse.
Before the bankruptcy in her past life, she had been too busy vacationing and playing around to notice the impending ruin.
“I’m not leaving the company…” Lyra said, her voice choking up.
“Go on,” Arthur said, his expression hardening.
Lyra knew better than to push her father when he was genuinely angry.
She didn’t want a full-blown argument with him.
[The Fairchild heir has the exact same car, so this must be his girlfriend or sister. And those legs! You can tell she’s gorgeous just from the back.]
[She didn’t wave her phone in the cop’s face or throw a tantrum. She’s already better than most rich kids!]
[She even handed the officer a bottle of water before leaving. Super polite, and that water costs a fortune.]
[Forgiving the world for five minutes. Pausing the eat-the-rich agenda for five seconds.]
While lounging at the club, Leo Chavez pulled up the news and showed it to everyone. “Looks like us rich kids just won some points back. All the comments are praising Lyra for being polite and humble with the cops.”
In the private room, leather sofas surrounded a low coffee table, the air carrying the faint scent of premium liquor. Rowan, Waylon Grayson, and Lucas Chavez were all present.
Leo despised internet trolls more than anything.
The last time he was caught kissing a woman, the internet dragged him, accusing him of maintaining a whole harem.
His father had given him a harsh beating, warning him to watch his behavior and never get caught on video again.
With Jasmine absent today, Leo finally felt comfortable bringing Lyra up.
