Lyra smiled and tossed the car keys to Caspian. Caspian caught them, staring blankly at the beast of a vehicle.
"What's wrong? You don't like it?" Seeing him completely dumbfounded, Lyra laughed, stood on her tiptoes, and ruffled his hair.
Caspian really felt like a little brother to her.
Since he had arrived at the Jameson house, she had practically watched him grow up.
Whenever she needed a favor, he never hesitated. She didn't even have to spell things out; he just instinctively knew how to back her up flawlessly.
Caspian shook his head vigorously, still too shocked to form a coherent sentence. He finally managed to find his voice. "Lyra, this is way too expensive..."
"I'm giving it to you, so it's yours. Cars are meant to be driven anyway. I asked Secretary Thorne, and he agreed that I could give it to you. You've helped me so much lately; you absolutely deserve this."
Soon, she wouldn't need his help anymore.
"Lyra." Caspian's face lit up with pure excitement. "Are you seriously giving this to me?"
"Yep!" Lyra nodded, gesturing for him to get in.
"Give it a test drive. Make sure you take your ID to the DMV within seven days to get the plates sorted."
Thrilled, Caspian hopped into the driver's seat and had Lyra get into the passenger side. He took her for a quick spin around the block.
"You're the best, Lyra. I never thought I'd get such a crazy expensive gift from a woman in this lifetime... Being a kept man feels amazing. Lyra, if you ever need anything from me, just say the word."
Sitting in the passenger seat, Lyra laughed. "Just drive me home first."
...
After Caspian dropped Lyra off at the Fairchild estate, he immediately floored it to the DMV. Since it was Friday and he was heading home for the weekend anyway, he drove his new ride straight back to the Jameson estate.
The massive vehicle was parked squarely in the courtyard.
When Charles found out Lyra had given him the car from Secretary Thorne, he asked, "She just... gave it to you? Lyra's surprisingly generous."
Gifts from the higher-ups weren't things you could just buy with money; they represented absolute privilege.
Charles knew exactly what this meant. He hadn't expected Lyra to be capable enough to earn such deep respect from Secretary Thorne.
Caspian replied, "She said it was too tall for her. She doesn't really like SUVs because they're a hassle to get in and out of."
For a brief second, Charles looked at Lyra in a totally new light. "Truly Arthur's daughter... This is... remarkably magnanimous..."
Honestly, this car was a massive status symbol. Lyra was just a young girl, so maybe she didn't realize its true value... If she did, she probably wouldn't have handed it over so easily.
"Usually, men are the ones spoiling women. It's completely flipped with you."
