However, all the dishes were served, and Rowan still hadn't arrived.
Wesley finished a phone call and walked over. "Ms. Ford, Mr. Jameson has a last-minute matter to attend to. He requested that you start eating without him."
"It's fine. I can wait." Jasmine sat quietly, unable to hide the eager anticipation in her eyes.
Seeing her like this, Wesley made another call, and Rowan arrived shortly after.
Before even offering a greeting, he sat down and said, "Let's break up."
The words felt like a bucket of ice water, instantly extinguishing all of Jasmine's joy. "What did you say?"
"We're done."
Jasmine froze in place, a sharp pain piercing her chest. It took her a long time to find her voice, and when she did, it trembled. "I don't agree to this."
Rowan looked up at her words. "Does a breakup require your consent?"
Jasmine's fingers tightened abruptly. She forced herself to suppress the surging panic in her eyes.
She stared at him in disbelief, her voice quivering with a hint of desperate pleading.
"Rowan, what are you talking about? Why are you doing this all of a sudden?"
"My family doesn't approve," Rowan answered bluntly.
Jasmine shook her head vigorously, refusing to accept such a flimsy excuse.
She knew better than anyone that his parents could never control him. Ever since the engagement fiasco, Victoria and her husband had indeed been displeased with her. But in the past, whenever Rowan dug his heels in, absolutely no one could sway his decisions.
Why would it be any different now?
"Why? You used to treat me so well. Couldn't you do this for me just this once..."
Rowan's tone was flat. "I was mistaken in the past."
