Chapter 68
“I asked Rowan how he felt about you finally moving on,” Lucas drawled, falling into step beside her. “He said losing your affection was like a fish losing a bicycle. Why would he care?”
Rowan would never say something like that.
That was entirely Lucas’s phrasing.
Rowan rarely ever bothered to bring her up, and he certainly wouldn’t waste breath making metaphors about it.
Lyra completely ignored him. She still needed to head home and change into her evening gown for the banquet.
“Lyra…”
Lucas reached out and grabbed her arm. Lyra stopped dead in her tracks, turning to glare at him as her patience snapped. “Could you stop being so pathetic, Lucas?”
Her eyes were filled with unmistakable disgust and revulsion.
Lucas recoiled slightly. “Since when did you start hating me this much?”
“You used to practically worship the ground I walked on. You’d do literally anything just to get a scrap of Rowan’s attention.”
It was true. She would have done anything for Rowan.
And the memory of it made her physically nauseous.
Right then, Lucas’s phone started ringing. It was his newly minted ex-girlfriend.
“Lucas, did I do something wrong?”
Taking advantage of the distraction, Lyra turned on her heel and walked away at a brisk pace.
That evening, Lyra and Caleb arrived at the gala.
To their surprise, before they could even greet the hosts, Rowan and Lucas walked through the doors. And in a rare move, Rowan had actually brought a date. Jasmine was wearing a designer gown dripping in synthetic diamonds, instantly drawing the eyes of everyone in the ballroom.
“Mr. Jameson’s girlfriend is absolutely stunning. Talk about a power couple.”
“I heard that dress she’s wearing costs as much as a penthouse at Veridian Lakefront.”
It was common knowledge that penthouses at the Veridian Lakefront started in the tens of millions of dollars. The whispers rippled through the crowd.
“Rowan really knows how to spoil a woman.”
“He treats her so incredibly well.”
Lyra stood perfectly still, forced to endure yet another public display of their romance.

She genuinely didn’t care anymore, though. In her past life, she had cared so deeply that the constant humiliation had practically killed her. Given a second chance, her ties with Rowan were completely severed. Her heart remained completely steady.
The couple was instantly swarmed by the city’s elite, surrounded by rings of eager socialites and businessmen. Caleb had zero intention of going over to say hello.
Lyra glanced at Caleb, hoping he wasn’t still harboring feelings for Jasmine. “Caleb, David Harrington is here tonight. Since you’re dating his niece, it’s only right we go over and say hello, don’t you think?”
Caleb blinked, realizing he had no idea what David Harrington even looked like.
Following Lyra’s subtle gesture, he spotted an elegant, middle-aged man across the room.
Just as Caleb looked over, David was in the middle of a conversation, but a second later, the older man’s gaze locked right onto the Fairchild siblings.
It was obvious David had been keeping an eye on them all evening.
He likely hadn’t approached them himself because Caleb and Kayla’s relationship wasn’t entirely official yet, and there hadn’t been any formal family introductions.
Caleb handed his champagne flute to Lyra, turned slightly to adjust the lapels of his suit, and then took his glass back. “Yeah, let’s go.”
They walked over and introduced themselves.
David was visibly delighted.
Fairchild Holdings had just secured a massive government contract, entirely changing their standing in the corporate world. Plus, rumors were swirling that Arthur was preparing to retire. The fact that Caleb was taking the initiative to introduce himself proved he was taking his relationship with Kayla seriously.
As the conversation naturally wound down, David smiled warmly. “Caleb, you should come over to the Harrington estate for dinner sometime.”
Caleb returned the smile. “I’d love to.”
After the banquet wrapped up, Caleb drove them home. Staring at the road, he asked, “How did you even know what Kayla’s uncle looked like?”
Lyra knew because, in her past life, David had attended multiple family dinners after Caleb and Kayla got married. Furthermore, when the Fairchild family had hit rock bottom, David had actually tried to help them out of the wreckage.
Unfortunately, Rowan’s ruthless tactics had been too overwhelming, and the Harringtons simply didn’t have the power to stop him.
She never held it against them.
“If you actually paid attention to Kayla, you’d know what her family looked like,” Lyra replied smoothly.
Caleb scoffed, assuming she was just teasing him for being a clueless boyfriend. “Honestly, sometimes I wonder if I’m your real brother, or if Kayla is your real sister.”

Their sleek car cruised smoothly over the Everglade Flyover.
Lyra stared out the window at the pitch-black river below, lost in her own thoughts.
