Chapter 118 Possessiveness Of Shifter

“Of course,” November replied without a second thought, telling Zee to pull up the footage right away.

November reminded, “Layla, the footage might get pretty bloody. If it’s too much, just let me know, and I’ll stop it.”

“It’s fine. I’ve seen stuff like this before, when they went after the passengers on the spaceship. Besides, Layla said calmly, meeting November’s eyes, “I’m a military cadet, you know.”

‘If I got scared by something like this, I wouldn’t be cut out for the academy,’ Layla thought.

A flicker of admiration flashed in November’s eyes. He thought, ‘Layla was just like that day when I saw her piloting the mech suit to shield the ordinary passengers on the spaceship.’

He nodded, signaling Zee to play battle footage.

In the footage, the rebels suddenly showed up and came in guns blazing at the Third Legion. Their goal was to steal energy supplies.

They ended up making off with most of the energy, and the Third Legion took a serious hit.

November had already seen the footage, so he kept watching Layla for any sign of fear. If she showed even the slightest hint, he’d have Zee shut it off right away.

But Layla didn’t flinch. She watched closely, totally focused on the screen. Then, when the familiar mech suit showed up and took a direct hit to the cockpit, her eyes widened sharply.

Most mech suits had their cockpits right in the chest area.

Unlike most, Nolan’s mech suit, thanks to its shift form, had its cockpit set lower, at the waist.

And almost nobody knew about this.

“Layla…” November called out softly.

“It’s fine. Keep playing,” Layla replied.

Later in the footage, after the rebels had snatched most of the energy, they were about to wipe out the Third Legion completely. But right at that critical moment, Victor rushed in with the Fifth Legion and pulled Nolan and his team out of danger.

Faced with overwhelming numbers, the rebels didn’t dare push their luck any further. They bolted with the loot and retreated in a hurry.

November let out a cold laugh. “Krish is still trying to get Victor recognized, and now he is even suggesting the Fifth Legion merge the remaining members of the Third Legion into their ranks.”

Layla blinked, caught off guard.

Only then did November realize and quickly drop the cold smile from his face. He felt a bit nervous. ‘Did Layla catch on?’ he wondered.

A moment later, Layla asked, puzzled, “Why would the Fifth Legion want to swallow up the Third Legion? Karter is also working for Krish, so what does that mean for Nolan?”

“Because Nolan has been too stubborn, and lately Krish has totally lost patience with Karter. Looks like he’s about ready to ditch Karter,” November said.

They’re using this whole mess as the perfect excuse to have Victor swoop in and snatch up all the power Nolan has been holding onto.

Layla frowned. “But I still feel like something is off.”

“Yeah, the timing is way too suspicious. Everything was just a little too convenient,” November agreed.

Suddenly, a new energy source was developed on the planet Nolan was overseeing, and the rebels somehow found out and attacked right then.

And just as the energy was stolen, and Nolan’s Third Legion took heavy losses, the Fifth Legion just happened to arrive. And they just happened to drive off the rebels.

And then there was that nagging doubt in Layla’s mind. ‘Did they just happen to hit the critical spot on Nolan’s mech suit, or did they already know that was the weak point’ We wi

Suddenly, Layla said, “Zee, pull up the footage 1.m when my Loureneved!”

“Right away, Layla!” Zee replied.

The footage was projected onto the big screen again, and Layla leaned in, eyes glued to every detail. The instant the Fifth Legion appeared, all the rebels seemed to freeze up for a moment, as if someone had hit pause on them.

‘It was as if they’d just received some kind of command, Layla thought.

“Wait, stop!” Layla exclaimed, turning to November in shock. “I remember Weston saying that device could control people’s minds. Look here. The rebels didn’t even put up a fight against the Fifth Legion. They just hesitated for a second, and then all of them retreated!”

November narrowed his eyes.

“You mean they backed off on purpose, didn’t even try to fight the Fifth Legion, and just bailed? Wait. Are you saying they’re actually in cahoots with the Fifth Legion?!” November blurted out.

Once that idea was out there, the whole ship fell silent.

‘The special device inside the rebels, the Fifth Legion, and Krish.’ Layla and November thought.

They looked up and locked eyes, tension thick in the air.

Layla just couldn’t wrap her head around it. She swallowed, her voice shaky. “That can’t be right. There’s no way Krish would be working with the rebels. He’s the crown prince. Alpha Prime is supposed to be his, isn’t it?”

November was just as stunned. This was all way too crazy.

He thought for a moment and said, “The real issue is whether those guys are actually rebels at all.

“I’ve already had Roger and his team investigate every rebel attack from the past twenty years. Once we get the results, we’

Il be able to work backwards and figure out what’s really going on.”

“So is the Third Legion really getting merged into the Fifth Legion?” Layla asked.

Layla felt bad for Nolan.

‘Nolan is so badly hurt right now. When he finally wakes up and finds out all his people are gone, it’s gonna hit him hard,’ Layla thought.

Watching Layla think of Nolan at every turn, Atlas felt a twinge of annoyance in his heart.

Shifters had intense possessiveness toward their mates. There was no denying it.

But Zee, who was a master at reading the room, quickly chimed in through Atlas’s earpiece, “Hey, Atlas, take it easy! Layla has always treated Nolan like her big brother, like family.

“That means she’s never had any romantic feelings for him, period! All you gotta do is see Nolan as your brother, too, as she

does.

“See? You and Layla are family, and Nolan is always just gonna be the big bro, nothing more!”

‘Big brothers are all bad news, Atlas thought.

Atlas thought of his so-called big brother. They were family by blood, but Krish always kept his guard up around Atlas. Atlas thought, ‘A total two-faced snake.

‘Right now…’

Atlas took a deep breath, pushing down the hostility boiling inside him. Then he said, “There’s no way I’m going to just let the Fifth Legion grow this strong. I’ll do my best to get the Third Legion folded into the First Legion for now.

“When Nolan is back on his feet, I’ll return command of the Third Legion to him, so he can rebuild and expand the legion.

himself.”

“Really?” Layla asked.

“Really.”

“Thank you for Nolan!”

Layla was speechless.

If this were Atlas, he would’ve totally lost it.

Atlas thought, ‘Why does it feel like you care more about your brother than me?

‘No. Right now, I’m November.

So Atlas bit down hard on his lip, forcing his tears to well up. His gorgeous blue eyes shimmered with a misty sadness. “Layla, do you still think of me as an outsider?” Atlas asked.

He looked just like a pitiful little fox, all curled up and sulking in the corner.

Seeing Atlas like that, Layla hurried to explain, “No. That’s not what I meant! We’re partners. How could I ever treat you like an outsider?”

“But you thanked me for Nolan. If we’re family, there’s no need for all that. Saying thanks just makes it feel like we’re not close.”

“You’re right, I got carried away. Sorry, Ninth.”

To comfort him, Layla reached out and hugged him tightly.
