Chapter 12
Chapter 12
Xanthe couldn’t fathom where Layla had found such a handsome and capable man!
It was simply unfair!
Just then, the dorm room door opened, and Layla emerged.
Atlas immediately rushed over, his eyes wide with anticipation. “Layla, where are you going?”
“The library.”
“I’m coming too!”
“Suit yourself.”
Layla didn’t spare Xanthe a glance as she walked towards the library.

Ignored, Xanthe’s expression turned sour. She hurried after Layla, demanding, “Layla, who was that?”
Layla kept walking, not bothering to engage with Xanthe.
Even a moment’s attention felt like a waste of her time.
Atlas, however, paused. He turned to Xanthe. “Who are you?”
“I… I’m Xanthe Sullivan.”
“Never heard of you.” Atlas turned away and quickly caught up with Layla.
Xanthe stood there, stunned.
Atlas, with his long legs, quickly drew abreast of Layla and stayed stubbornly by her side.
He said in a low, coaxing voice, “Layla, that woman just asked who I was. I didn’t tell her I was your husband. I’ll only say it when you give me permission.”
Layla sighed. “Didn’t we agree to talk about that after your rut ends?”
“Right, whatever you say, my star! You’re not mad anymore, are you?” He watched Layla anxiously, his large, fluffy tail gently brushing against her boots.
In truth, Layla’s anger had long since dissipated.
Atlas was still in his rut, and his affection for her surpassed even that for his own mother. It was only natural for him to be so close and dependent on her now.
From that moment on, no matter where Layla went, he followed obediently.
Despite his large stature, he was like a soft, cuddly animal.

The tip of his fluffy tail would sometimes sneakily brush the back of Layla’s hand, a ticklish sensation mixed with the faint, almost imperceptible scent of cedarwood.
Layla glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, noting that he wasn’t actually reading but nodding off. dozing. It was a shame, she thought, if only he weren’t Prince Atlas.
After a busy day, they prepared to return to the dorms, but Atlas received a call and had to leave first.
However, as Layla reached her dorm door, she saw two figures: a sophisticated woman and a delicate young lady-Mireya James, Caleb’s mother, and Denise, his sister.
Mireya wore a traditional bodycon dress adorned with gold embroidery, and a large, glittering gemstone necklace hung around her neck.
Her gaze upon Layla was displeased, her chin slightly raised.
“Layla, why did you have someone injure Caleb?”
Layla noted the unconcealed disdain in Mireya’s eyes. She knew Mireya had always looked down on her, simply because she was an adopted daughter of the Sullivan family and not a “true” aristocrat.
For the sake of the Sullivan family, Layla had always tolerated it.
But now, she had no ties to them, and there was no need to put up with this snobbish, contemptuous woman.
“Actually, I wanted to beat him myself. It’s just that Caleb was too scared to face me in the arena.”
“You really are a rude, unwanted girl! Now that the Sullivan family has discarded you, you’ve just gone completely off the rails, haven’t you?”
Mireya was shaking with fury, venomous words spilling out one after another.
But they no longer affected Layla.
When you no longer cared, their words and actions simply vanished into thin air.
Layla stepped forward, her voice indifferent. “Move. I need to get back to my dorm.”
“Is that how you speak? Is that your upbringing?”
“Exactly! Layla, you’re so ill-mannered and rude, it’s no wonder my brother dumped you!” Denise chimed in.
Layla turned to the mother and daughter, a faint smile playing on her lips. “I’m quite grateful for his rejection. As for hurting him, if any of you have a problem with it, you’re welcome to get your revenge. The Mech Combat Arena at the Imperial Academy’s College of Military welcomes all combat challenges. That is, if you have what it takes.”
With that, Layla pushed open her door and re-entered her dorm.
The James women stood there, trembling with rage, but neither dared to physically confront Layla. In the end, they just hurled more insults from the doorway before heading towards Caleb’s dorm.

Denise suggested, “Mom, Layla is completely unresponsive to reason. Why don’t we go after her new husband? I hear he’s just good-looking but has no real background.”
“No real background, really?”
“Of course not. Would someone with real connections marry Layla?”
Mireya’s heart ached for her son’s beating. She nodded. “Have your father find a top-tier senior trooper in the school to challenge that punk. I won’t be satisfied until he’s crippled!”
“Oh, too bad. Layla doesn’t deserve him.”
Although Layla was only an adopted daughter of the Sullivan family, her shift tier was quite high. Many had expected her to choose the Trooper Division at the Imperial Academy, so her choice of the Mech Engineering Division had come as a surprise.
Mireya had actually wanted to deal with Layla directly, but she knew it wouldn’t look good. So, settling for the punk who injured Caleb would have to do!
If Layla knew what the mother and daughter were thinking, she’d probably be shaking her head in disbelief. knowing they were digging their own graves.
Trying to take on Prince Atlas?
Were they too comfortable in Duke James’s position, or did they simply have a death wish?
After preparing everything needed for military training, Layla opened her optical computer and transferred three hundred thousand starcoins to an account.
Celia: [Layla, why did you suddenly transfer so much money?]
Layla: [It’s for your medical expenses, and for the kids’ living and tuition fees.]
Celia: [That’s far too much! Layla, please don’t give us all the money the Sullivan family gave you. In the long run, they might have issues with it.]
Celia: [The kids all look up to you as a role model. They’re all studying hard, hoping to get into the Imperial Academy someday.]
Celia: [As long as you’re doing well, we’re all happy.]
Layla: [Please keep the money. I’m doing very well, and I want you all to be well too. If anything comes up, remember to tell me.]
After ending the call with Layla, the eighty-year-old Celia Brennan’s eyes moistened as she told the children around her, “Your Layla is so wonderful. She’s living a good life, and she never forgets us. You all should learn from Layla too, okay?”
“Ms. Brennan, Layla has always been our idol.”

“Oh, by the way, Ms. Brennan, there’s someone lurking outside, sneaking around. I wonder what they’re up to. Could they be a bad person?”
Hearing this, Celia quickly wiped her eyes and went outside.
But she saw no one.
Such incidents often occurred at the OrphanCore. Sometimes, parents who had abandoned their children there would regret it and come back to secretly observe them.
Celia sighed, “If they truly regret it, they can come directly to me. No matter what, children are happiest when they grow up with their parents.”

It was late. After completing her online assignments for various subjects, Layla stretched. Just then, the dorm door creaked open, and a fox-eared boy cautiously stepped inside.
Layla turned to look at him.
She had actually thought Prince Atlas wasn’t coming back.
After all, not much time was left until his rut ended.
“Star, it’s so late. Are you still awake because you were waiting for me?” The handsome fox-eared boy’s bright eyes were full of expectation.
Layla shook her head. “No, I just finished my
work.”
“That’s great then. Does that mean we can sleep together now?”
Layla was speechless.
