Chapter 11

Atlas bit his lip, his brow furrowed.

Though he was a towering six-foot-two, he seemed to shrink into himself, a picture of misery.

His fluffy fox ears flattened against his head, making him look utterly pathetic and deceptively harmless.

But Layla remained unmoved. “Your Highness,” she said calmly, “we had an agreement not to reveal our marriage. You just announced it to everyone. When we eventually get divorced, how am I supposed to explain this?”

“Then let’s not get a divorce,” Atlas blurted out. “Why do you keep bringing that up? Star, did I do something wrong? Just tell me. I’ll fix it, I promise.”

Gazing at his stunning face, Layla found it impossible to stay angry.

She sighed. “Let’s not talk about this now. We’ll discuss it after your rut is over.”

“Star, I’ll remember everything that’s happening right now, even after the rut ends, Atlas insisted.

Layla walked away without looking back.

She knew he’d remember.

‘But the more clearly you remember,’ she thought, ‘the more you’ll hate who you were during this time. And the more you’ll hate me.

Having lost her appetite, Layla returned to her dorm. She quickly downed two tubes of bio-engineered gel and opened her optical computer to select her courses.

The first-year mecheng curriculum was heavy on theory and light on practical application.

By overloading her schedule, she could accumulate credits faster and graduate early.

A fleeting image of a certain fox-one who had graduated in record time-crouching pathetically outside her door flashed through her mind. Layla immediately pushed the thought away.

She couldn’t afford to get soft.

He wasn’t someone she could build a life with.

Basic training was starting in a few days. All first-year cadets had to report to Training Delta for a month of rigorous military drills, and Layla needed to start preparing.

Time slipped by, and her optical computer buzzed with a call from an unknown number.

“Who is this?”

“Layla, it’s me.” It was Xanthe. “I know you’re furious with me. You can yell at me, even hit me, and I’ll take it.

Expressionless, Layla ended the call and blocked the number in one swift motion.

After the incident at the Mech Combat Arena, the campus forums were on fire.

Everyone was talking about how Layla’s new husband had thrashed her ex-fiancé.

Some “helpful” student had even snapped a picture of Caleb plastered against the wall, looking like he’d have to be peeled off, and posted it online.

The humiliation made Caleb so angry he almost choked.

Xanthe was shocked when she heard the news. Where had Layla found such a powerful man?

As for his claim about being married to Layla, she didn’t believe a word of it.

She had rushed to see the injured Caleb and called Layla right in front of him, which had led to their brief, one-sided conversation.

Xanthe bit her lip, her voice thick with manufactured guilt. “Caleb, I’m so sorry. This is all my fault. Layla wouldn’t have hired someone to hurt you if it weren’t for me.”

Injured and humiliated, Caleb was in no mood for Xanthe’s usual sweet-and-sour routine.

He looked at her, suddenly remembering she was only a C-Tier shifter, a tier so low it was a miracle she’d even gotten into Imperial Academy.

What he once found charmingly delicate now just seemed pathetic and weak.

“It has nothing to do with you,” Caleb said, his patience worn thin. “Just go home. I have to get to class.”

Xanthe was an expert at reading people, and she could feel the impatience radiating off him.

A pang of hurt struck her. They were supposed to be getting married soon, so why was he growing colder?

She decided to find Layla and expose her little charade. She was convinced Layla had just hired an actor.

As she approached the dorm, she saw a handsome guy in a school uniform crouching by the door.

He had adorable, fluffy white ears, but what really struck her was how incredibly good-looking he was-the most handsome man she had ever seen.

Putting on her signature sweet voice, she asked, “Hi, could you tell me how to get to room 922 in the mecheng girls’ dorm?”

Atlas was feeling incredibly down, his fluffy cars flattened in distress,

Layla had completely ignored him, and it hurt.

feelings.

He looked up at the girl in front of him, his handsome brow creasing. “Are you here for Layla?”

Xanthe’s heart skipped a beat.

That sounded way too familiar.

“The Layla you’re talking about… is that Layla Sullivan?” she asked tentatively.

“I asked you a question. Are you here for Layla?”

Atlas had no patience for strangers.

Xanthe was stunned. Could this beautiful man be the one who had beaten Caleb up? Layla’s supposed mate?
