Chapter 171

Chapter 171

Krish’s reply came in almost instantly. [Follow them. Don’t get spotted.]

Victor was practically buzzing with excitement, already imagining himself winning Krish’s favor and getting noticed by Krish.

Victor even dropped everything and jumped into an aero-vehicle himself, determined to tail Layla and her crew. But the First Legion’s stellar rangers were very sharp.

Roger might act a bit dramatically around Atlas, but he wouldn’t be the First Legion’s commander if he didn’t have the chops.

A few minutes later, Roger said, deadpan, “There’s actually an aero-vehicle tailing us.”

Layla blinked in surprise. “Who is it?”

Roger replied, “No clue. The aero-vehicle’s got no special ID, but the way they’re tracking us? That’s definitely Military Command.”

Nolan turned to look out the window and spotted the aero-vehicle trailing them, always keeping just the right distance, not too close, not too far.

None of them could figure out who the tail was actually after.

Layla said, “Colonel Lewis, can you lose them? I really don’t want random people finding out where my mech suit lab is.”

“Piece of cake!” Roger replied.

The aero-vehicle had been on autopilot, but Roger immediately switched it off at the console. Back in the academy, they’d drilled these anti-tracking maneuvers over and over.

Layla could do it, too, but with a pro like Roger around, she wasn’t about to show off.

It turned out, Roger, the First Legion’s commander, was way out of Victor’s league. Five minutes later, Victor had lost sight of his target.

Victor slammed his fist down on the console in frustration. “Damn it! I totally forgot that bastard Roger was on that aero- vehicle!”

Meanwhile, Roger pulled up to their destination with a smug grin. He turned to Layla and said, “I’ll be sticking around the Military Command for a while.

“His Highness Atlas wants you to reach out to me if you need anything, November’s off Alpha Prime on a special assignment.”

Roger knew what was really going on. Actually, everyone else on board knew the real story, too. Nolan was the only one who didn’t know what was up.

Layla shot Nolan a quick look, then nodded at Roger and thanked him.

Layla planned to settle Rosa here for now and would take her to the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core later. Then she made a point of formally introducing Nolan and Olivia to each other.

Olivia said, “Commander Sullivan, could you lie down and release your psychic force? I need to check how badly it’s been damaged. Also, I’ll test if your psychic force reacts against mine.”

Nolan nodded, but just as Layla was about to leave, he suddenly asked, “Layla, can you stay with me?”

Chapter 171

“Absolutely not!” Olivia interrupted, her expression serious. “When treating psychic force, there can’t be any distractions, or it could backfire.

“Commander Sullivan, do you not trust my medical skills, or are you worried I’ll do something to you?”

Nolan froze for a moment.

Layla had never seen that speechless look on Nolan’s face before, and she couldn’t help but stifle a laugh.

She said quietly, “Nolan, just try to relax. Dr. Gill really knows her stuff. I’ll be right next door talking to Rosa. She just got here, so I want to make sure she’s comfortable.”

“Alright,” Nolan replied. He knew that when a mermaid psychic healer was treating someone, nobody else should be around.

Psychic force fluctuations could end up hurting people.

Layla left the room and took a stroll around the house. It wasn’t as spacious as the one at Wastelands-9 Orphan Core, but it was way more hidden.

There were two and a half floors above ground and another one and a half below, with extra-high ceilings. Seriously, it was the perfect spot for a mech suit lab.

Zaa said earnestly: [Layla, I’ve already taken control of the home AI system here, and the defense system is up and running. Oh, and Zee just sent me a file package to upgrade my firewall.]

Layla blinked in surprise. “Zee’s already sending you upgrades?”

Honestly, Zee was way too advanced for his own good; he was even trying to charm other AIs now!

Layla couldn’t help but suspect that Weston had programmed Zee with some kind of weird flirting subroutine or something.

Zaa was much more composed. [Zee messaged me, saying someone’s been trying to breach its firewall and hack into its core system lately.

[So it upgraded itself and sent me the firewall patch so I could beef up my own defenses. Zee said if they can’t get through its system, they might come after mine next.]

Layla was about to say Zee was probably just overreacting, most likely just looking for more reasons to talk to Zaa.

Everyone knew Atlas had an advanced AI like Zee, but nobody else realized Layla had one, too. Well, maybe there was one person who did.

It was Xanthe.

Layla always had the feeling Xanthe knew way more than she let on. Xanthe hadn’t said anything yet, but no one knew what she might do next.

‘Maybe I can get Nolan to spill later, Layla thought.

Layla turned to Zaa. “Make sure you upgrade your firewall. Also, if someone tries to mess with you, can you tell!

[I can,] Zaa replied. (And Zee already told me it’s tracking the intruder’s signal. No results yet, but if they come after me, too, I’ll team up with Zee, and we’ll track them down together.]

“Okay,” Layla said.

After she’d gotten familiar with the place, Layla hopped online to order some basic supplies and groceries, then went to visit

Rosa.

Chapter 171

Layla said apologetically, “Rosa, I’ve got a few things to handle, so I might not be able to take you to the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core until a bit later.”

“It’s fine. You all have your hands full, and I’m the only one with nothing to do,” Rosa sighed, her voice trailing off in confusion. “I still can’t believe His Highness actually blew up that house.”

Layla fell silent for a moment, remembering all the chatter she’d seen online. People had already forgotten about Leilani’s sacrifice.

Suddenly, Rosa said, “I wonder when Princess Leilani will finally be free.”

Layla’s heart skipped a beat.

Realizing what she’d just said, Rosa quickly changed the subject. “Layla, don’t worry about me. I already messaged Mollie. She’ll be here soon.”

“Okay,” Layla replied.

Layla knew Mollie was the only family Rosa had left, so it didn’t surprise her at all that Mollie would come over right away.

But what really threw Layla for a loop was that Leilani actually showed up with Mollie!

Leilani, dressed in casual clothes, smiled and said, “Layla, what’s wrong? Surprised to see me?”
