Leon was a little speechless. “Caleb, aren’t you being a bit too sensitive? Didn’t you already break up with Layla?”
Caleb’s gaze faltered.
Yes, Layla was the one in the wrong. He had already moved on from her!
He suddenly picked up speed, intending to overtake Layla. No matter what, he couldn’t admit to being weaker than her!
But whether Caleb was just incredibly unlucky or too careless was unclear.
Just as he was about to catch up to Layla, a mutated vine from the side suddenly ensnared his foot.
The momentum was too great, and he couldn’t recover, tumbling head over heels to land squarely on his face.
Leon, nearby, was stunned. Shifters almost never made such a clumsy mistake.
Layla only glanced, then looked away.
Annie, beside her, continued, “He’s so weak, can’t even handle a mutated vine. Good thing you dumped him.”
Layla smiled.
In truth, she was genuinely grateful to Xanthe for the whole Caleb ordeal.
Before, Layla hadn’t refused the engagement to Caleb to repay the Sullivan family for raising her.
After the engagement, Caleb and his family had been openly critical of her. Mireya, especially, would constantly taunt and humiliate Layla, making it clear she despised her.
For the sake of Karter and Harper, Layla had endured it all.
Now, thankfully, she no longer had to put up with Caleb and his rotten family.
In the end, Layla completed the hundred kilometers of cross-country ahead of schedule, landing in the top
ten.
Annie finished just two steps behind Layla, securing eleventh place, and the cat was absolutely overjoyed.
“Layla, you’re amazing! I’ve decided I’m sticking with you for the whole military training!”
Layla just smiled without speaking. She found that this cat-like girl would sometimes adore her and other times inexplicably dislike her.
But Layla didn’t mind. Someone like Annie, whose emotions were always on her sleeve, was actually quite easy to get along with.

Chapter 18
What she truly loathed was someone like Xanthe.
She appeared so innocent and kind on the surface but was dark and manipulative deep down.

Just as the two finished registering their information with the instructors and were about to head back to their dorms to rest, five people suddenly approached them.
The young man leading them was exceptionally refined and handsome, with delicate features. His military academy training uniform hugged his long legs perfectly, showing off his physique.
The four behind him were also outstanding, each with a powerful aura.
Especially a blonde girl among them, whose appearance bore some resemblance to Annie’s, but her aura was far more commanding.
Annie dropped her playful grin.
“Here comes the Crown Squad,” she muttered with a hint of annoyance.
As the Sullivan family’s adopted daughter, Layla hadn’t often attended the gatherings of aristocratic families.
Though she had heard of the Crown Squad, she had never interacted with them.
Besides, they looked down on Layla, the adopted daughter.
The so-called Crown Squad didn’t actually include Prince Atlas. Their leader was his cousin, Tomas, renowned for his commanding genius.
Some even claimed Tomas’s commanding talent was no less than Atlas’.
That was a bit of an exaggeration, to say the least.
After all, though their ages were similar, Atlas was already a commander, while Tomas was still just a freshman.
The blonde girl with short hair was Annie’s cousin, and the cream of the crop of the Knight family’s generation.
Layla turned to look at Annie. ‘Hmm, compared to her, Annie is just a pampered housecat.
The Crown Squad stopped in front of Layla. Chaim, the mech engineer among them, spoke directly, “Layla, let me see your whip.”
His haughty tone immediately rubbed her the wrong way.
Layla said nothing.
Romeo, behind Tomas, couldn’t help but say, “Your whip looked pretty interesting just now, and we wanted a closer look. Just hand it over, stop dawdling.”
All five were S-tier shifters or above; Tomas himself was SS-tier.

They simply stood there, exerting their psychic force, creating immense pressure
Even Annie, an S-tier shifter herself, could barely stand it, turning to look at Layla
Layla’s expression remained calm. “No.”
Chaim asked, “What if I wanted to buy it?”
“Sorry, it’s a custom-made weapon. Not for sale.”
“You!” Chaim frowned slightly, looking extremely displeased.
But Layla didn’t care one bit.
Back at the Sullivan manor, she had to put up with a lot and hide her true self.
But now, Layla only wanted to live for herself and wouldn’t compromise for anyone else’s sake,
Anyone who bullied her? She’d just push back.
With that, Layla strode towards her dorm.
Annie was shocked.
She hurriedly followed Layla, whispering, “You’re hardcore! You actually dared to talk back to the Crown Squad.!”
“I’m just stating facts. It’s custom-made, absolutely not for sale.”
“But aren’t you afraid of offending them?”
Layla turned to look at her. “Offend them? If they’re unhappy, we can settle it in the Mech Combat Arena. I haven’t had a good fight in ages; my mech suit is getting rusty”
It was only then that Annie remembered Layla’s Mech Close-combat skills were amazing.
Even back in their training classes, Annie could never beat her.
Bringing that up, Annie asked curiously, “Why didn’t you choose the trooper track with me? Why did you go for mech engineer?”
Layla said seriously, “Being a mech engineer is more financially promising.”
Annie, who never lacked money herself, had momentarily forgotten that point.
Now that Layla was no longer part of the Sullivan family, she had to earn her own living and money. Suddenly, Annie realized how tough it must be for her.
But the next moment, Annie remembered something else. “Then you could have made custom-made weapons for the Crown Squad just now! They’re rich! You could have fleeced them without hesitation!”

“No. Who I make weapons or build mech suits for depends entirely on my mood.”
Annie was speechless. She simply gave Layla a thumbs-up again.

“Even though you’re just a mech engineering student, you already have the swagger of a mech suit master.”
The two chatted as they returned to their dorm. They were among the first to return, so, barring any surprises, they would have a good long rest.
Annie was busy proclaiming she was going to finish her unfinished face mask when Shayla, the mech engineering instructor, approached.
“Layla, can you step out for a moment?”
“Instructor, what is it?”
“Someone wants to see you.”
