Chapter 184

Chapter 184

As an upper-tier shifter, Layla could hear every word of the nasty gossip.

Mollie, also an upper-tier shifter, must have heard it too, but she didn’t even frown. So Layla just pretended not to notice.

Mollie gave her a slightly surprised glance.

Soon, Layla followed Mollie to meet Leilani. There were two other women present as well.

Layla recognized one of them as Angelina, who had recently married Krish. The other young woman seemed gentle and detached from the drama around her.

She was Krish’s second wife, Yara Mooney.

Yara was the cousin of Vanessa, whom Layla had gotten into a fight with and even knocked out before.

Funny how everyone here seemed to have some beef with Layla, including Krish himself.

When Leilani spotted Layla, her eyes sparkled. She called out right away. “Layla, hurry up and sit next to me.”

Leilani had been wearing a polite smile before, but now, seeing Layla, her grin finally felt real.

Yara and Angelina exchanged a look and stood up together, totally in sync.

Yara said, “Looks like Her Majesty has things to handle, so we’ll get out of your way now.”

Leilani smiled and said, “Alright, you guys can go.”

Angelina didn’t say a word the whole time. She just shot Layla a nasty look before following Yara out.

Even though both of them were married to Krish, neither of them was the official Princess Consort. But Layla was the legitimate Princess Consort, recognized by everyone.

Right now, Layla outranked them both.

But that was just for now.

Once Krish took the throne, things would change.

Yara noticed the stormy look on Angelina’s face and said in a calm voice, “I heard you and Consort Layla had some drama back on Meridia?”

Angelina had been holding back around Leilani, thinking to herself, Just wait till I’m Queen. I’ll make Leilani grovel just like this.

‘And Layla will have to get down on her knees before me, too.

When Yara tried to stir the pot, Angelina sneered, “Oh, come on, Yara. Me and Consort Layla? No real beef. If anyone’s got a problem, wasn’t it your cousin Vanessa who got her ass handed to her by Atlas at school?”

The two women locked eyes for a moment.

Yara just smiled. “Yeah, Consort Layla isn’t someone you want to mess with.”

They didn’t bother with more small talk. After a couple of polite exchanges and some subtle probing, they split up and went

their own ways.

Chapter 184

Leilani got an update from the Al in her earpiece and chuckled softly.

Layla, who was checking out wedding dress designs, looked up. “Her Majesty?”

Leilani gave her a gentle smile. “Layla, you don’t have to be so formal.”

Layla hesitated. After all, she’d never had a mother before.

It was one thing to say that in private, but here in the palace, it felt different.

Mollie chimed in, “Consort Layla, in this whole universe, aside from Prince Atlas, you’re the only one who actually has the right to be close to Her Majesty.

“When Angelina first married Prince Krish and became his fourth wife, she tried calling Her Majesty Mom during her first formal bow, but Her Majesty immediately put her in her place.”

Krish wasn’t even Leilani’s son, so most of the time, he just called her Her Majesty unless it was some special occasion.

Angelina wasn’t even the official Princess Consort yet, but she’d already become so eager to claim Her Majesty as her mother.

Everyone knew she was just after that Princess Consort title.

What most people didn’t realize was that she still had her eye on Prince Atlas, too.

So when Angelina called Her Majesty Mom back then, it wasn’t just Leilani who looked displeased; even Krish’s face turned

sour.

Once Layla figured it out, she realized Leilani truly cared for her.

Leilani smiled warmly. “Alright, dear. Are there any wedding dress styles you like?”

Layla had already browsed the virtual catalog and nodded. “They all look beautiful, but I’m not really sure about all the royal wedding customs. Could you decide for me?”

“Alright, that’s settled. By the way, Layla, if people in the palace start speaking ill of you, what would you do?” Leilani asked.

Layla looked at Leilani, her own expression still gentle and calm.

Layla figured out that it must have been Mollie who told Leilani about the servants gossiping earlier.

‘Is Leilani testing me?’ Layla thought to herself.

Layla paused to think, then said, “I guess I’m sort of in a halfway position here, not really the one in charge, but not just a guest either.

“If the servants are gossiping about someone above them, it’s either because someone’s egging them on, or they just don’t know their place. People like that shouldn’t stick around.

“But honestly, I’m not the real boss of the palace, so it’s not my place to deal with them. As long as they don’t have the guts to say it to my face, I can let it slide.”

Leilani asked gently, “But if you were the Princess Consort, would you do something about it?”

Layla nodded. “I would.”

Leilani broke into a warm, satisfied smile. “You’re a smart girl, Layla. Anyway, those annoying servants won’t be our problem for long. Come on, let’s get back to picking out your wedding dresses.

Chapter 184

“Your ceremony with Atlas will be a little simpler than the Emperor and Empress’s, but you’ll still need at least five different gowns.”

Layla got it.

Leilani had always known there were some servants in the palace who didn’t really follow the rules, but she never saw herself as the real boss here. As long as they acted right when she was around, that was good enough for her.

As for the troublemakers, they were just a little gift for the new Queen and King to deal with later.

Just like Layla never wanted to get too involved with this beautiful but cold palace, Leilani didn’t really want to either.

She’d spent so many years here, but it was never really by choice.

They spent a lovely afternoon together, trying on all sorts of gowns. In the end, Layla said a little apologetically, “I can’t just pick everything based on my own taste. What if Prince Atlas doesn’t like any of these styles?”

Leilani smiled and teased, “Does it really matter if he likes them? What’s important is that you love them. When it’s time for the photos, he’ll just be a handsome backdrop anyway.”

Layla couldn’t help but chuckle at that.

She found herself liking Leilani more and more.

If she’d ever had a mom, maybe she’d be just like Leilani.

As Layla was about to head out, Leilani asked, “Layla, do you think your family will come? I mean, besides Celia and the folks from Wastelands-9, what about the family you just reconnected with? Will they be here?”

Layla hesitated for a second. “I’ve told them about it, but they’re really far away, and I haven’t heard back yet. So I’m not sure if they’ll make it.”

Leilani nodded gently. “I understand. Still, I hope they can come. After all, they’re your birth parents. I just think you’d be even happier if they could be here.”

Layla nodded, feeling a mix of emotions.

She wasn’t even sure if she should feel happy about it.

If her dad really brought the whole family along, it wouldn’t just be about showing up for the wedding.

Funny how life works. What you’re most afraid of is exactly what comes knocking.
