Chapter 21

Chapter 21

:

Layla said nothing, but Annie, ever the righteous one, was already fuming on her behalf.

“Holy shit! So it’s true? What an ungrateful bastard!”

“Ahem.”

“Oh, right. No offense to you actual wolves,” Annie quickly corrected herself.

They chatted as they made their way to the assembly point.

Today’s training was marksmanship, split into two parts: with and without a mech suit.

‘Shooting, that’s not so bad,’ Layla thought, slightly relieved.

But the next moment, Herbert Mathis, the head instructor, shattered their hopes. “I bet you’re all breathing a sigh of relief, thinking today will be an easy day, huh? Heh. You spoke too soon.”

A collective groan went through the students. This instructor was pure evil.

Herbert seemed to relish their dismayed faces. “The targets will be mobile,” he continued. “If you can’t keep up with them, you can look forward to a big fat zero!”

Annie glanced at Layla, worried. “Layla, maybe you should just ask for a day off?”

Layla shook her head. “It’s fine. I’ll just do my best.”

“What are you two ladies whispering about over there? Feeling proud after yesterday’s performance?” Herbert called out, his tone menacing. “Well, don’t get too comfortable. I forgot to mention, the number of mobile targets is based on your individual scores from yesterday. The higher your rank, the harder it gets!”

Annie’s face went pale.

She turned to Layla, her voice laced with despair. “I regret it. I shouldn’t have piggybacked off you in the first round yesterday…”

Layla didn’t look much better.

If she hadn’t taken the contraceptive, she might have stood a chance, but now…

Just then, Atlas strolled by, the sound of his military boots sharp and crisp.

Flanking him a few steps behind were Alexander Hunter, the base commander, and Antony Hernandez, the dean of the College of Military.

Layla was standing at the front, having been called out.

So Atlas immediately noticed her unusually pale face.

He frowned slightly.

‘What’s wrong

with her?’

A strange, unfamiliar feeling stirred within Atlas, an inexplicable irritation.

Beside him, Antony asked, “Your Highness, what do you think of the students’ training so far?”

“Too lax.”

“Yes, sir! I’ll have the instructors adjust the intensity immediately!”

Atlas gave a slight nod and turned to leave.

He had a lot on his plate. Voidraiders had been spotted on Wastelands-9, and reports suggested they were trying to steal energy cores.

He had to get there.

Once Atlas was finally off the training base, Alexander let out a massive sigh of relief.

He wiped the cold sweat from his brow. “I don’t know why, but that prince terrifies me. Compared to him, Prince Krish is a breath of fresh air.”

“Ahem,” Antony coughed pointedly.

Alexander snapped back to the present. “Right, are you really going to increase the training intensity for those kids?”

Antony looked over at the students and nodded. “It was an order from Prince Atlas. He’s only doing it for their own good.”

Meanwhile, the students, preparing for their marksmanship training, were blissfully unaware that their session had just been upgraded.

From normal mode to hell mode.

Layla felt like she was walking on clouds, each step unsteady.

Annie watched her, frantic with worry. “Stop pushing yourself. Just go ask for a day off! A zero is better than collapsing!”

Layla shook her head, beads of cold sweat trickling down her cheek.

‘If Xanthe dared to force a marriage on me today, who knows what she’ll pull tomorrow.’

She had to get stronger.

Only the strong are truly fearless.

Chaim Howard, who had just entered the testing area, was still annoyed by Layla’s earlier attitude toward him.

Seeing her looking so haggard, he sneered, “If you can’t handle it, don’t force it. You don’t want to get turned into Swiss cheese in there.”

Annic couldn’t hold back. “Do you ever shut your mouth?”

Chaim just smirked and walked into the arena.

“I can’t stand the Crown Squad,” Annie grumbled. “Except for Tomas Coffey, they all look down their noses at everyone!”

‘Especially my damn cousin,’ she thought.

Annie ranted for a bit before noticing Layla was quiet. She looked down and saw her strapping something to

her arm.

“What are you doing?”

“My psychic force is unstable, and I don’t have much strength right now. I need something to help me aim and track.”

“Holy crap, is that your whip?”

“Yeah. Its third form.”

The whip was now coiled around Layla’s left hand, looking at first glance like a mechanical gauntlet.

But it was packed with powerful functions.

Soon, it was Layla’s turn. She picked up a mech-gun and walked inside, only to be plunged into total darkness.

An electronic voice buzzed in her ear: “Contestant 10. Stationary targets are worth 1 point. Mobile targets are worth 5 points. Additionally, you have 9 special targets with a high point value. Good luck!”

It sounded complicated, but all she had to do was shoot.

Layla latched onto one detail. Nine special targets. ‘Could that be the nine students who went in before me?’

Suddenly, her vision cleared. She was in a derelict city, surrounded by blood-stained billboards, collapsed buildings, and shattered glass littering the ground.

The stationary targets were easy to spot. Layla quickly picked off ten of them.

It wasn’t difficult, but her stamina was draining fast.

Her training uniform was already soaked with cold sweat.

‘I can’t let this drag on. I need to finish this, and fast.’

Just then, she felt a cool breeze behind her. Layla instantly dropped to the ground, spun around, and fired a shot in the direction the bullet had come from.
