Atlas’s gaze lowered. Then what reason do you think I could give that would make her change her mind about the divorce?”
Zee was stumped.
It was true. Layla seemed dead set on the divorce, wanting nothing to do with the royal family.
Its programming was a tangled mess of confusion. Finally, Zee sighed. “But you shouldn’t have said that to her just now. Look, all you had to do was act a little cute and needy, like you did during your rut.”
The memory of his unrestrained behavior during his rut made Atlas’s expression turn icy.
“Do you want to be shut down?”
Zee immediately went silent.
After a moment, Atlas considered that the girl was stubborn and probably wouldn’t ask the doctor for any medication.
And the infirmary here wouldn’t have any high-efficacy restorative serums anyway.
‘She did just see me through my rut. She should probably get her strength back,’ he thought.
He picked up his optical computer and dialed the number for Andrew Gill, his personal military doctor.
When Layla arrived at the infirmary, it was crowded.
It was full of people who had been injured during the cross-country run. She even spotted the unlucky guy who’d had his leg torn off by the gatorbeast.
With today’s advanced medical technology, especially for a high-tier shifter like him, the leg would grow back. His training score, however, was another story.
“Are you injured too, dear?” a female instructor at the infirmary asked Layla with concern.
“I just helped my partner through his rut,” Layla said. “I need a contraceptive serum.”
The instructor advised her, “You know, it’s not easy for shifters to have children. That serum has side effects. It’ll put you in a weakened state for forty-eight hours and can make your psychic force unstable. You still have training to get through. Are you sure you want to take it?”
“It’s fine,” Layla said calmly.
Seeing Layla’s insistence, the instructor said no more and turned to get the serum.
A guy sitting on a sickbed, waiting for his leg to regrow, looked up at Layla. “Did your partner die or just dump

ouchers
Layla was already in a foul mood. She shot him a look. “I think that gatorbeast should have gone for your neck instead of your leg.”
“Oh, so you have been paying attention to me.”
“Not paying attention. I’ve just never seen anyone dumb enough to let a gatorbeast chew their leg off on purpose.”
The guy was speechless.
Just then, the instructor returned with the serum.
Without a second’s hesitation, Layla took it and left.
She didn’t care why that jerk had done what he did. She had enough of her own problems to deal with.
Back in her dorm, she finally had some time to rest.
Lying fully clothed on her bed, Layla replayed the conversation from the royal lounge.
‘Can a person really be that different when they’re not in a rut?’ she wondered.
It was like he was a completely different person.
Layla closed her eyes, feeling the serum begin to take effect. A cold sweat broke out across her body.
The next two days were going to be agony, but she just had to grit her teeth and push through it.
Just then, her two roommates returned.
Exhausted, they quickly showered and collapsed into their beds.
The noise woke Annie, who rubbed her cat-like eyes. She saw Layla lying on the bed, staring blankly.
“Layla, where’d you go?” she asked, curious. “You come back from wherever and now you look like this.”
Layla was such a badass wolf, and now she’s just… gone?
“It’s nothing. Get some sleep. Tomorrow’s training will be even tougher.”
“Oh, okay.”
“By the way,” Layla added, “don’t team up with me tomorrow.”
“What? Why?” Annie was wide awake now, nearly jumping out of bed.
“Layla, are you dumping me now that you’re getting stronger? Are you trying to climb the social ladder? Who

A sharp pain shot through Layla’s stomach, and she was drenched in a cold sweat. She blinked. “Who’s Kierra?”
“My cousin, the one in the Crown Squad,” Annie said. “Wait, weren’t you just with the Crown Squad?”
“No. I’m tired. Let’s just sleep.”
Layla rolled over, pulling the blanket over her face to hide how pale she’d become from the sweating.
‘Crown Squad? I was with the volatile, split-personality Prince Atlas,’ she thought grimly.
‘How did I get tangled up with that monster?’
It was just over an hour until dawn.
Layla forced herself to get some sleep. When she opened her eyes again, her blanket was soaked with sweat, and she felt utterly drained.
‘Damn it. I’m going to get a zero on today’s training exercises for sure!
At six in the morning, the assembly bell rang again. Annie was well-rested since they’d returned early the day before.
But when she saw Layla, she was so shocked she almost hissed.
“Oh my god, Layla, what happened to you? Did you go for another hundred-kilometer run while we were sleeping?”
“No. I took a contraceptive.”
Annie froze, her mouth hanging open. It took her a moment to speak. “So you’re going to be weak for two days? Is that why you told me not to team up with you today? Because you were afraid you’d drag me down?”
“Think whatever you want.” Layla started for the door. The assembly bell was ringing, and they needed to get there fast or they’d lose points.
Annie hurried after her. “But why would you take that? I thought your little puppy was so attached to you. Or… oh, hell, I get it. His rut ended, and he just fucked and ducked, didn’t he?”
