It turned out that Chaim Howard had run into Layla carlier at the entrance of an abandoned factory.
Before he could even draw his weapon, Layla had already taken him out.
That same misfortune had befallen him a total of eight times.
Once, after respawning, Chaim had barely taken a few steps before he ran into his squad leader, Tomas Coffey. He immediately recounted Layla’s outrageous actions, hoping Tomas would avenge him.
Two gunshots later, both Chaim and Tomas were sent back to the respawn point.
Layla’s draw was fast, steady, and precise. Tomas, distracted by Chaim’s rant, had been an easy target. In short, Layla had taken them both out in one fell swoop.
A freshly respawned Chaim was fuming. He felt he’d let his commander down, which only fueled his hatred for Layla.
So now, finally spotting Layla looking weak and vulnerable, he figured it was the perfect time for payback.
How could he resist?
But he never expected that Layla, with her back to him, seemed to have eyes in the back of her head and spotted him instantly.
And that wasn’t all. As weak as she looked, she still managed to attack him with that strange device on her
arm.
Just like that, Chaim was sent back to the respawn point yet again.
By the time Annie Knight realized what was happening, Layla had already fired and the attacker was gone.
“Did someone just attack you? Did you get him?”
“Yeah. It was Chaim.”
“Damn! I thought I was the only one who knew how to bait people, but you’re a natural. And you reeled in a big one!”
Chaim was ranked higher than Layla, so taking him out was worth a lot of points. Besides an accidental shot on Tomas, most of Layla’s score had come from Chaim.
She was confident that while she might not top the leaderboard, her final score would definitely surpass his.
What she didn’t know was that her clean takedown of Chaim had once again caught the attention of the instructors.
Herbert Mathis, a trooper division instructor, said excitedly, “This girl’s awareness is off the charts. I can’t wait to see her handle a mech suit’s weapons. With that killer instinct and offensive drive, she should be a trooper!”

The instructors from the command division, which Layla had originally applied for, had remained arrogantly silent. But now, a trooper instructor was already trying to poach her?
The mech engineer instructors were annoyed. Shayla Mcgrath shot back at Herbert, Layla applied for the command division, not the trooper division. Besides, look at her. Her physical stamina seems low. She’s not cut out to be a trooper.”
Herbert looked at the monitor, where a pale Layla was leaning against a wall, having been resting for a while.
He frowned. “You’re right. She is a bit frail. I wonder if we could train that out of her.”
Shayla rolled her eyes. ‘He’s not giving up, is he?’
Oblivious to the discussion in the control room, Layla tried to message her mentor again to ask what was going on, but her message went unanswered.
That was Weston for you-always popping in and out like a ghost. She was used to it.
As for Atlas’s message? She didn’t see any reason to reply.
The shooting assessment finally ended.
Layla was so drained she could barely stand. Annie had to support her as they left the arena.
“Layla, your taste in men really sucks,” Annie said, her tone gruff. “First that jerk Caleb, now this ungrateful pretty boy. You should just swear off men and be alone forever.”
It was meant to be a caring remark, but coming from the cat-like girl, it sounded anything but.
Layla just nodded. “Yeah, that was the plan.”
She was used to being alone. Staying that way didn’t seem so bad.
Her answer seemed to sadden Annie. “Come on,” she said after a moment, “let’s go check our scores. You can see how badly I beat you!”
Annie was ranked twenty-fifth, a solid performance.
She had a lot of natural talent but was too laid-back, like a cat who’d rather lounge than lift a paw.
“See? I’m pretty damn good!” she boasted, scanning the lower part of the list for Layla’s name. “Hey, Chaim’s at thirty-one… Where are you? Did you not even make the top fifty?”
Layla, dizzy and exhausted, leaned heavily on Annie.
“Try looking a little higher up,” she murmured.
“No way. You look half-dead. How could you have scored higher than me? Holy crap! You’re third!” Annie’s cat-like
eyes went wide with shock.
The first-place spot unsurprisingly went to Tomas, whose score was miles ahead of everyone else.

Second place was taken by Wayne Lara, the strongest trooper in the Crown Squad. The guy was quiet but incredibly strong, famous for once winning a fight against an opponent in a mech suit while he was on foot.
And Layla’s name was right below Wayne’s.
She had outscored the other two troopers from the Crown Squad, including Annie’s own arrogant cousin.
Most impressively, her score was only ten points behind Wayne’s.
“Impossible!”
The angry shout came from Chaim.
He knew shooting was his weakest skill, but he’d worked hard.
If Layla hadn’t taken him out so many times, he might have made the top twenty.
What infuriated him most was that Layla, the one who kept killing him, was now ranked third.
The thought that his points had contributed to her score made him tremble with rage.
Layla gave him a cool, dismissive glance.
A sore loser wasn’t worth her energy.
Annie, however, saw Chaim’s fury and snorted. “Who was it that was running their mouth before the match, challenging Layla? You’re ranks below her. Had enough yet?”
“She must have cheated!”
“Oh yeah? Says who? What are you, the security cameras?”
Their argument made Layla’s head throb. All she wanted was to go back to her dorm and lie down. She tugged on Annie’s arm. “Don’t bother with him. Let’s just go.”
Her retreat only emboldened Chaim. “See? You’re running away! Feeling guilty, Layla?”
Their shouting had drawn a crowd. Tomas narrowed his eyes at Layla before murmuring to Wayne beside him, “Go get Chaim.”
“Got it.”
Caleb and Leon Baker were also in the crowd. They had ranked in the sixties and seventies, thoroughly mediocre.
“You don’t think Layla actually cheated, do you?” Leon wondered.
“Who knows,” Caleb replied coldly.
The fact that Layla had ranked so much higher than him left a bitter taste in his mouth.

Just then, Antony Hernandez, the head of the College of Military, arrived with several other instructors,
The students fell silent. The head instructor’s presence must mean something serious. Had Layla actually broken the rules?
Chaim hoped so.
Annie shot a worried look at Layla, but she stood her ground, remaining firmly by her friend’s side.
Antony walked directly up to Layla. “Layla Sullivan,” he began, “I understand you originally applied for the command division. Is that correct?”
