Layla was so weak that she could barely stand, even with Annie holding her up. But she was facing the head of the college, so she had to hold it together.

She simply nodded. “Yes.”

“Well, you have one chance to change your major,” Antony said. “Think about it. You have until the end of military training to come to me with your decision.”

The surrounding students were stunned.

So, Layla hadn’t cheated. She was so exceptional that the dean himself was offering her a transfer.

Annie’s eyes widened. She looked at Layla with a confusing mix of jealousy and pride for her friend.

Chaim, on the other hand, was completely dumbfounded.

He was still in a daze as Wayne dragged him away.

Just then, Layla, her face pale, spoke up. “Thank you, Mr. Hernandez, but I have no intention of changing my major. If there’s nothing else, I’d like to go back to my dorm and rest.”

The crowd fell silent. Layla had actually refused.

Antony was surprised too, but he couldn’t force a student. He just nodded and left.

Annie started walking Layla back to the dorm, completely bewildered. “Layla, are you nuts? Do you have any idea how hard it is to transfer into another division at the College of Military? And from the sound of it, if you didn’t want command, you could have gone for the trooper division.”

“What future is there in the mech engineer division?” she continued. “Besides, now that you’ve left the Sullivan family, you know how expensive being a mech engineer is. You might not even be able to afford the basic tools later on.”

Annie chattered on, but when she got no response from the girl leaning on her, she glanced down. Her eyes went wide.

Layla had passed out.

In reality, Layla had been on her last legs while talking to Antony.

Her stamina was completely gone.

If Annie hadn’t been there to support her, she would have collapsed to the ground.

Her extreme weakness caused her rose-scented pheromones to leak out. Vaguely, Layla was aware of Annie rushing her to the med-center.

“She’s been pushing herself too hard. She should have been resting in her dorm for the last two days,” said the

doctor, the same one who had given Layla the contraceptive serum. She frowned at Annie. “She’s already been with a partner. The best thing for her right now would be for her partner to soothe her. If not, we’ll have to use a stronger suppressant, and that could be even more painful.”

Annie gritted her teeth. “That heartless bastard is long gone. Doctor, isn’t there any other way besides making her suffer through the suppressants?”

The doctor shook her head.

Layla forced her eyes open and whispered weakly, “Do it.”

She’d rather die in agony than ask Atlas for help.

Since Layla had made her decision, the doctor sighed and administered the stronger dose of suppressant.

Miles away, Atlas, having just successfully captured a voidraider leader, sat with a stern expression. He suddenly felt a wave of discomfort.

His pheromones felt like they were on the verge of going haywire.

He cut off his adjutant, Roger, who was giving a report. “Roger, have you ever experienced your pheromones going out of control?”

“Usually, that happens for one of two reasons, Your Highness,” Roger replied. “Either it’s a reaction to someone else’s pheromones or a trigger agent, or… my partner’s pheromones are in turmoil. Why do you ask? Did that damn voidraider use a trigger on you?”

Atlas narrowed his eyes.

No, that was impossible. When he was fully conscious, no one could get close enough to affect him.

That left only one other possibility.

Layla’s pheromones were in turmoil.

Roger, who was in the know, was sharp enough to see the shifting expression on his prince’s face. Instead of stating the obvious, he chose a more subtler approach. “I have a friend whose partner’s pheromones went haywire once. In that situation, the best thing is for the partner to be there to soothe them. If the partner isn’t around, they have to take a stronger suppressant, and the person… suffers immensely.”

Atlas’s brow twitched.

He pictured the woman-cool, aloof, and untamable.

She was probably afraid of pain, wasn’t she?

He still needed her. Their marriage had to last a while longer.

Which meant… he supposed he could condescend to help her.

Atlas looked up, his voice cool. “You stay here and handle the follow-up.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Roger watched with a sense of relief as Atlas boarded his aero-vehicle and set a course for Training Delta.

He’d been worried the prince would divorce Layla the moment he was clear-headed. But now… could it be the little devil was starting to fall for her?

Whether the prince was falling for anyone was unknown, but when Alexander Hunter received the news that Prince Atlas was on his way again, he felt his stomach drop.

He paced anxiously. “He just left. What does he want now?”

His adjutant whispered, “It can’t be a complaint about the base, can it? I’ve made sure everything is in order. We haven’t had any incidents.”

“Well, what can we do? Let’s go and greet him.”

Layla was unaware of Atlas’s arrival. The moment the stronger suppressant hit her system, it felt like a thousand knives were carving into her bones.

The pain was everywhere, so intense it nearly made her black out again.

But she gritted her teeth, fighting to stay conscious.

Completely passing out now could make things even worse.

Annie watched Layla’s agonizing struggle, her heart twisting in her chest. “Doctor, how long will she be like this?”

“A few hours at best. At worst… it could last until dawn tomorrow.”

“What? The pain could kill her!” Annie exclaimed, distraught. She’d never seen Layla in such a state.

Just then, a figure hobbled over from the next room, leaning on a mechanical crutch in the doorway. “Men are all trash,” he said coolly. “Suffering like this for one of them is just stupid.”

Annie was fiercely protective. She could tease Layla, but no one else could.

She whirled around to face the man with the limp. “Are you sick in the head? You’re a guy yourself! Besides, you don’t know the whole story, so shut up. Don’t you dare talk about her.”

Jayvon Turner sneered. “She’s obviously talented. Isn’t this all because she took a contraceptive serum for some guy? If that’s not stupid, what is?”

“And you’re not stupid? Getting your leg torn off by a gatorbeast just crossing a marsh,” Annie shot back. Her temper, already short, flared at his mockery of Layla. “What right do you have to run your mouth? Get the hell out of my sight!” She marched over and shoved him out of the room.

The ward was quiet again, with only Layla left inside.

The pain had dulled to a throbbing numbness, but her mind was sharp.

She wasn’t some love-struck fool. She was enduring this to cut ties with Atlas.

A child would have complicated things beyond repair.

In her hazy state, Layla thought she smelled the familiar scent of cedarwood. She tried to open her eyes, but she didn’t even have the strength for that.

She was completely unaware that she was being lifted into strong arms and carried out towards the royal family’s private suite.

When Annie returned after roughing up Jayvon-almost re-breaking his newly healed leg-she found the hospital bed empty.

“Shit! Where’s Layla?”
