Chapter 25

Chapter 25

Annie Knight was practically climbing the walls.

:

She knew Layla couldn’t have just walked out on her own in that state.

Did someone sneak in and snatch her while she was helpless?

Annie hunted down a doctor to ask, but he had no idea where Layla had gone.

Next, she and the doctor found a professor, who was also clueless.

While they were turning the base upside down looking for Layla, she was lying in a soft, snow-white bed.

When Atlas learned the reason for Layla’s condition, his eyes had been filled with a chilling coldness.

‘So she wants my child that badly?’ he’d thought.

But seeing her fragile, exhausted form, his heart softened unexpectedly.

“You’re always pushing yourself too hard.”

The words were harsh, but his eyes held a tenderness he himself didn’t recognize.

The rich scent of cedarwood slowly enveloped Layla, mingling with her sweet rose fragrance.

Memories of his rut came flooding back. Atlas leaned in and kissed the corner of her mouth.

A 100% genetically matched partner was the most perfect, personalized serum.

The pain wracking Layla’s body slowly faded, and the pallor of her face was gradually replaced by a delicate pink flush.

She felt like she was in a sweet dream.

She was vaguely transported back to the day they were at the courthouse for their Genetic Pairing Program registration. She was in front of the huge floor-to-ceiling window of the lounge, watching his nine beautiful, silvery-white tails swaying gently.

In her dream state, Layla subconsciously reached out to stroke one of the soft, fluffy tails, her eyes half-closed.

‘Why am I dreaming of him when I’m in so much pain?’

Layla slept for a long, long time. When she finally woke up, not only was the pain gone, but she felt a surge of energy, as if she’d just taken a high-grade bio-engineered gel.

She looked around in a daze, her eyes widening in shock when she realized she was in Atlas’s private suite.

“You’re awake?”

A familiar, cool voice jolted her back to reality.

Any lingering warmth from her dream vanished instantly. She quickly dressed, her movements sharp and

silent.

Atlas, who had been reviewing a file, frowned at the sight.

“Aren’t you curious why I came back?”

“We went through your rut together,” Layla stated flatly. “So when my pheromones went haywire, you could sense it. And I’m still useful to you. Before our marriage is terminated, you don’t want me to end up disabled or brain-dead from a pheromone surge, so you came back to help me through it.”

Atlas gritted his teeth. She was so much cuter when she was in her rut.

Now that she was lucid again, she was back to being cold and detached.

‘Detached from me. That’s why she didn’t want our child,’ he thought bitterly.

“Good, you understand,” he said, his tone flat. “I’m busy. You can go.”

“Don’t worry, Your Highness. I think about our divorce constantly. I would never get the

wrong idea.”

With that, Layla walked to the door, her hand already on the electronic panel.

“I gave you access to a secure comm channel, didn’t I?” Atlas’s voice stopped her. “You were in so much pain. Why didn’t you contact me?”

“You already know the answer to that,” Layla replied without turning around, and then she was gone.

She didn’t look back to see the expression on his face.

The notoriously short-tempered Prince Atlas was surely fuming.

Did he expect her to be grateful?

The agony she’d endured last night was his fault, after all.

Layla quickly composed herself and headed back to her dorm.

She had to keep training, keep getting stronger.

Only when she was truly powerful could she be fearless.

When Layla walked into her dorm, Annie sprang from her chair as if she were on a spring.

“Layla! You’re finally back! Where have you been?”

“Dealing with the pheromone surge. What’s on the training schedule for today?”

Annie knew the fastest way to resolve a pheromone surge was with a partner’s help.

She was dying to ask if Layla’s “puppy” had returned, but seeing Layla’s cool demeanor, she swallowed her questions.

“You missed the mech suit shooting assessment. The professor said you need to make it up sometime today. Today’s training is endurance.”

Layla nodded. She went into the bathroom to take a shower. In the mirror, she frowned at the faint, mottled pink marks on her body.

Annie knocked on the door. “Layla, Shayla is here for you. She said you can skip the endurance training this morning and go make up the shooting assessment.”

“Okay, I’ll be right out.”

Annie and the other two girls left for endurance training, and Layla followed Shayla to the mech training

room.

“Why did you refuse the department head’s offer to transfer?” Shayla asked.

She didn’t pry into her students’ personal lives, but Layla’s decision to stay in the mech engineer division had surprised her.

Layla looked at her serious professor and answered earnestly, “Because I love mechs.”

The reason was simple, but it was the absolute truth.

Shayla saw the sincerity in Layla’s eyes and felt a sense of kinship.

Her tone softened slightly. “Once you get back to classes, the cost of parts can be high. If you run into financial trouble, you can come to me.”

“Thank you, Professor!”

Although Layla had her own money and didn’t need to take her professor’s, she was grateful for the offer.

The two of them arrived at the mech shooting training room. The assessment used a simulator, but it was virtually indistinguishable from a real mech suit.

Students would enter the cockpit, select a map, and be scored on their shooting performance.

Coincidentally, the person in charge of the training room today was Nolan, who was temporarily filling in.

Layla was happy to see her brother, but as she got closer, Nolan’s eyes fixed on the red marks on her neck, and he froze.

“Layla, what happened to your neck?”
