Chapter 29
Chapter 29
“Talk about what?” Layla said. “I don’t think we know each other.”
Annie shot her a look. ‘Just talk to him, and you’ll get to know him!’
Layla rolled her eyes at her friend’s fawning.

Still, Tomas’s friendly demeanor, free of the usual aristocratic arrogance, made her willing to chat.
“Alright, Tomas. What’s on your mind?”
“I was wondering if you’d be willing to join my squad.”
He watched her quietly, awaiting her answer.
Layla didn’t keep him waiting. She shook her head decisively. “Sorry, I’m already on a team.”
Tomas hadn’t expected a refusal, but he maintained his composure. “I see. If you don’t join my squad, your final score for the training will probably be lower than mine.”
“We’ll see about that.”
Tomas gave her a long, searching look. “Then I look forward to seeing what you can do.”
With that, he turned and left.
Layla then noticed Annie standing beside her, completely dumbfounded.
She raised an eyebrow. “Annie, are you out of your mind?”
“Layla! You’re the one who’s out of her mind! That’s the Crown Squad. Tomas Coffey himself invited you! You could have joined and kicked my snobby cousin out. Why did you say no?”
Annie was practically tearing her hair out, just short of accepting on Layla’s behalf.
Layla frowned. “If I joined them, what about you? I already promised to team up with you, and I can’t go back on my word. Besides, I don’t like the idea of them as teammates.”
The unspoken implication hung in the air: she preferred Annie as a teammate.
Annie’s mouth opened, her eyes welling up.
‘Damn it, how does she always know the right thing to say? Now I’m getting all emotional.’
Seeing Layla start to walk away, Annie quickly called out, “Hey, wait for me! Where are you going?”
“Weren’t we going to find teammates?”
“But that’s the instructors’ office!”

Layla turned back and nodded. “By now, most people have probably already registered their squads. We can save time by going directly to the instructors and getting a list of students who haven’t.”
Annie’s eyes lit up. “Good point!”
When they arrived at the instructors’ office, Shayla was there. After they explained their purpose, she nodded and logged into the faculty system to check the students’ squad statuses.
“You’ve left it a bit late,” Shayla said as she searched. “There are only seven troopers, two mech engineers, and one commander left without a team.”
Annie was shocked. “Ma’am, that doesn’t add up. Weren’t the numbers in each major supposed to be perfect for forming squads?”
“Some people are still picking and choosing, so not all squads are finalized,” Shayla explained. “Your options are limited. There’s only one commander left, and you’ll need to recruit two of the seven remaining troopers.”
“Thank you, ma’am.” Layla had already copied the list and was heading out the door, with Annie scrambling to catch up.
Shayla watched Layla’s retreating back, hoping she’d find the teammates she needed.
But the students left over were either too weak or… notoriously difficult to work with.
Layla showed the list to Annie. “Do you know any of these people?”
“I know all seven troopers; we’ve had classes together. These two are a bit… different. I suggest we try the other five first.”
Layla, however, was intrigued by the two exceptions. “What’s different about them?”
“Well, one of them, this Wallace guy, is a big dude who’s only interested in food. Nothing else gets him going. The other one, Alex Richmond, is famous for being the ice king of the trooper division. He’s so cold, no one can get close to him. One’s hard to command, the other’s hard to cooperate with. Let’s go find that one commander before he’s gone.”
Layla wasn’t too concerned about her teammates’ personalities, as long as they could work together.
But as they rushed to the commander’s dorm, they found Caleb James already talking to the female student.
Great, the jerk again. It was a small world.
Annie hurried to the girl. “Are you sure you don’t want to join our squad? Layla has a really high score, which will boost our team’s total.”
The girl, a quiet, bespectacled type, didn’t seem thrilled about joining Caleb’s group, but…
She shook her head firmly. “I can’t join your squad. If I do, we’ll become a target for the Crown Squad.”
During the assessment, squads could attack each other.

Since Layla’s score had topped Tomas’s, the Crown Squad would undoubtedly target her team.
No one wanted to get on their bad side, which was the real reason no one had approached Layla.
Layla let out a small laugh. “Okay, I get it. Let’s go, Annie.”
“But Layla, we won’t have a commander!” Annie cried out in frustration.

Just then, Caleb spoke up. “One of the commanders had a sudden rut and was taken away. Layla, why don’t you join our squad?”
The people around Caleb, including the girl who had just joined them, stared at him in surprise.
Caleb’s lips were set in a firm line as he looked at Layla intently.
He, too, had been stunned by her recent achievements.
At first, he’d been angry and insecure, feeling humiliated that a woman he once looked down on had surpassed him.
But then Layla’s scores had repeatedly beaten even Tomas Coffey’s.
Even Leon and the others had lamented what a shame it was.
“Too bad she’s not your fiancée anymore, or you’d look so good right now.”
With no internet access, Caleb hadn’t been in touch with Xanthe.
Her cute, clingy act was starting to fade from his memory.
Every day, however, he was confronted with Layla’s brilliance.
A sliver of regret had begun to grow in his heart.
Today felt like a chance, a chance to patch things up with her.
Maybe they could fight side-by-side, and maybe, just maybe, it could lead to something more…
“Sorry, I don’t want to be your teammate,” Layla said flatly, turning to leave.
Martha, standing behind Caleb, let out a sigh of relief, but she couldn’t resist a snide comment. “What’s with the attitude? Your squad is about to fall apart.”
Annie wasn’t having it. “You know, Layla just turned down Tomas Coffey. What, you think your squad is better than the Crown Squad? Please!”
Caleb’s face turned ugly. “Impossible! Everyone knows the Crown Squad only accepts people from noble families. You’re not a Sullivan anymore.”
Layla stopped and looked back at him. “What’s it to you?” she said softly.

Caleb was speechless.
Without another word, Layla walked away. She had no time to waste on a jerk like Caleb.
Annie, on the other hand, felt a surge of satisfaction before worry set in again as she caught up.
“Layla, what are we going to do? We can’t find enough people.”
