Chapter 30

“It’s fine,” Layla said calmly.

“You’re right. You can be our commander. We just need to find two more troopers and a mech engineer!” Annie exclaimed, her optimism returning.

Layla stopped and looked at her. “Annie, aren’t you worried about pissing off the Crown Squad?”

“Nah. I already got on Kierra’s bad side. Everyone in the family thinks she’s got a brighter future than me anyway, so who cares?”

They shared a small smile.

“Alright then,” Layla said. “Let’s go find this Alex Richmond and Wallace Keith

you mentioned.”

Alex and Wallace shared a dorm room. The hallway outside their door was eerily quiet, a clear sign that no one else was eager to team up with them.

Layla knocked. A moment later, a guy holding a bag of chips opened the door, looking a bit surprised.

Before he could speak, someone shoved him aside. A striking young man with long, blue hair stepped out.

“It’s you?” Alex said, his eyes widening slightly.

“You must be Alex Richmond,” Layla said with a nod. “I’m here to ask you to join my squad.”

Alex’s features were exquisitely defined, almost delicate, with long lashes framing deep blue eyes that matched his hair.

The color reminded Layla of Atlas, and she quickly pushed the thought of that fox out of her mind.

‘What am I thinking about him for?’

Alex’s gaze was cool and detached. “You got first place in the training assessment. Why would you have trouble finding teammates?”

His unspoken point was clear: ‘Why would you come to us last?’

Annie quickly interjected, “There were five other people, but Layla insisted on coming to you two. That shows how much she values you.”

Alex let out a cold laugh. “I get it. It’s because you showed up Tomas Coffey, so no one else dares to join you for fear of offending the Crown Squad.”

“What about you?” Layla countered. “Are you afraid of them too?”

“They’re just a bunch of rich kids who got lucky with the genetic lottery. What’s there to be scared of?”

Alex wasn’t afraid, but Wallace, clutching his chips, whispered, “You’re not, but I am.”

Alex shot him a glare. “Everyone already looks down on you. Do you even have the right to be scared?”

Wallace instantly deflated, shrinking back with his bag of chips.

“The Crown Squad is nothing,” Annie declared. “The Crown Prince isn’t even in it. Besides, Tomas Coffey already asked Layla to join his team, and she turned him down.”

This clearly surprised Alex. He studied Layla with renewed interest before finally saying with gravity, “Alright. We’ll join your squad.”

“Good.”

With Annie, that made three troopers. All they needed now was a mech engineer.

Without a commander, Layla would have to fill that role for now.

But when they went to find a mech engineer, there was only one person left. Annie’s eyes went wide. “How can it be you?”

Jayvon Turner, his leg finally healed, was lounging on his dorm bed. His injury had kept him sidelined for nearly the entire training period, and he had a grand total of zero points to show for it.

If other students avoided Alex and Wallace because they were difficult, they avoided Jayvon because he was seen as utterly useless.

Jayvon was engrossed in a game, barely looking up. “You guys must be really scraping the bottom of the barrel to come asking me. Wait a second, Layla, aren’t you a mech engineer?”

“We don’t have a commander, so Layla has to take that spot,” Annie said, her expression sour.

Jayvon burst out laughing. “Hahaha, that’s rough! But I guess you wouldn’t be here talking to a cripple if you weren’t desperate.”

Layla’s face hardened at his laughter. “Annie, let’s go,” she said sharply.

Jayvon’s laughter died in his throat.

Annie was stunned. “Layla, we don’t have a commander, and now we won’t have a mech engineer either. What are we going to do?”

“I’m not teaming up with someone who has no ambition,” Layla said coldly. “Did you know he let that gatorbeast bite his leg on purpose?”

“Seriously? Is he an idiot?”

“Come on. We’ll figure something out. Besides, who says we don’t have a mech engineer?”

Layla was ranked first in points, while Jayvon had zero. Her score was high enough to count for two people, as long as the instructors approved it.

Annie’s admiration for Layla grew, but before leaving, she shot a final glare at Jayvon. “Have fun with your

zero points for the rest of the training!”

Whatever his reasons for his pathetic attitude, he wasn’t what Layla’s squad needed.

They rushed back to Shayla Mcgrath to submit their squad roster. On the way, Layla received a message.

Atlas: [Star, I miss you.]

Layla’s heart skipped a beat.

‘Is his rut acting up again?’

They hadn’t seen each other in a while. Even though their optical computers had a secure comm channel for constant contact, Layla had deliberately avoided reaching out.

Just then, Shayla’s voice cut through her thoughts, firm and serious. “No, I can’t register this squad. One person can’t count as two.”

“But Professor, didn’t a student from the command division drop out?”

“Even so, you need five members. As I recall, there’s still a student named Jayvon Turner available, isn’t there?” Layla’s expression turned grim.

Annie looked utterly dejected.

Did they really have to go back and beg that guy?

Forget whether his leg would slow them down; what if his defeatist attitude sabotaged them mid-mission?

Layla knew Jayvon was a terrible choice.

She glanced down at the message on her optical computer.

If it were just her, it wouldn’t matter. But now she had Annie, Alex, and Wallace to think about. Especially Annie. If the squad wasn’t formed, her score for this entire section would be a zero.

Annie deserved a better shot than that.

And… a part of Layla was unwilling to accept defeat.

Just then, another message from her clingy fox popped up.

Atlas: [Star, please talk to me. I’m already at the Training Delta spaceport.]

A muscle in Layla’s jaw twitched. Normally, Prince Atlas was the epitome of cold indifference, an untouchable royal who seemed a universe away. But the moment his rut hit, he turned into a needy puppy.

Annie was pacing anxiously nearby. Seeing Layla staring into space, she pleaded, “Layla, what should we do? You know what, I’ll go talk to Jayvon.”

Seeing Layla remain silent, Annie steeled herself and turned to run back to the dorms.

Layla clutched her optical computer, her mind racing. After a long moment, she looked up at Shayla. “Professor, we have a commander. Please go ahead and register our five-person squad.”
